Just a weeks ago, May 11 to be exact, a significant moment happened for Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas running back James Charles. It was the day that the 5-foot-10, 190-pound prospect received his first scholarship offer.
"The offer came during spring practice," he explained to WKUInsider.com. "WKU was my first offer."
Rated among the top rushers in the Sunshine State, Charles was excited to receive an offer from a program that has enjoyed high production from its backfield in recent years.
"The feeling was out this world receiving an offer from a school like WKU," he said. "Having running backs the last five years rushing over 1500, 1800, 1600, 1700, and 1500 yards."
While Western Kentucky head coach Jeff Brohm was the first head coach to extend a scholarship offer, he won't be the last. In fact, he's helped start a trend.
"After I received an offer from WKU I had nine more offers," reported Charles.
Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Middle Tennessee State and Pittsburgh are among those to join WKU with an official offer.
Charles camped at Georgia this weekend and has already worked at Miami's camp. He also has camp plans for Tennessee and South Florida.
He describes the recruiting process as "pretty cool" and explained that he enjoys "seeing different colleges and what they have to offer."
While impressed by the developing relationship with WKU, Charles isn't in a rush to make a college decision and isn't claiming any current favorites.
