Preview: Toppers favored in opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The new season is here for the Western Kentucky University football team as the Toppers open the season favored on the road tonight against Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn., at 7 p.m. central time.

Western Kentucky University second-year football coach Jeff Brohm said earlier this summer he wanted to take another step with the Toppers' program this season.

Well, it won't take long to see if the Toppers can do that.

The Toppers open the season on Thursday night in Nashville, Tenn., against SEC foe Vanderbilt in a game that will be televised on the SEC Network. It's also a game where the Toppers are favored.

Despite starting as double-digit underdogs, the line now favors WKU. It's not only a statement for the Toppers talent and ability as a program but with a win could be a major step forward.

"You want people to watch and see what you're all about," Brohm said. "On national TV and when it's on a weekday, even more people are watching. These are the games you like and want to play in. These are the games you can make a statement in.

"These are the games we have to rise to the occasion in."
