Chattanooga, Tenn., defensive end Giovanni Hightower has committed to Western Kentucky; he camped with WKU in June

Chattanooga, Tenn., McCallie School defensive end Giovanni Hightower, who attended Western Kentucky's Gallatin, Tenn., satellite camp in June, has committed to the Toppers. He's No. 17 on the board for the Class of 2017.

Chattanooga (Tenn.) McCallie defensive end Giovanni Hightower made a four-hour round trip from his home to Gallatin, Tenn., in late June to work out in front of the Western Kentucky football coaches at a satellite camp.

Hightower is glad he made that trip.

The 6-foot-6, 240-pound Hightower left the camp with a scholarship offer from the Hilltoppers and on Sunday afternoon gave WKU coach Jeff Brohm and his staff their 17th commitment in the Class of 2017.

Being recruited for his abilities on both sides of the ball, also lining up at tight end, Hightower also he;d offers from Austin Peay, Mercer and Stephen F. Austin.  Others including multiple Conference USA programs were expressing an interest.

Hightower said the WKU coaches "loved me at defensive end." He was listed on the Division II Preseason All-State team in Tennessee.
