Western Kentucky defensive back Leverick Johnson helped fuel the Hilltoppers 49-21 win over visiting Florida International when he turned a impressive tipped-ball interception into an even greater highlight when he returned it 61-yards for a touchdown.
With the Hilltoppers leading 21-7 early in the second quarter, Johnson ran stride-for-stride with FIU receiver Thomas Owens on a deep route, tipping the intended 35-yard pass with his right hand before hauling it in and turning the opposite direction. After slipping by a couple initial would-be tacklers, Johnson followed a wall of blockers down the home sideline and broke through at the goal line.
The product of Miami (Fla.) Northwestern has two interceptions and seven pass break-ups on the season.
