One of the top defensive tackle prospects in the state of Alabama has picked up a Western Kentucky scholarship offer.
6-foot-5, 265-pound Gavin Lewis of Madison (Ala.) Bob Jones added the offer last week and a pair of former players from his high school that became Hilltoppers are helping him get an understanding of what the opportunity at WKU provides.
"I don't really know much about Western Kentucky, but I know of a few people that go there that really like it in (offensive lineman) Brandon Ray and (linebacker) Drew Davis," he told WKU Insider. "Coach Jami DeBerry is the coach that is recruiting me right now. I spoke with him over the phone and he is already sounding like a coach I would love."
In addition to WKU, Lewis also holds scholarship offers from Colorado, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Purdue, Southern Miss, Troy, Tulane and others. With interest continuing to climb, Lewis is appreciating the recruiting process and in no rush to claim favorites.
"I am loving it right now," he said. "It's something that every high school player should go through. Every kid has a big dream, but now that I'm living mine, I'm in love with it. I have no favorites right now. I like them all."
WKU, along with others expressing strong interest are likely to receive a visit this summer.
"I do plan on visiting the school during the summer," he said. "That is when I'm going to make a lot of my visits."
As a junior, Lewis registered 50 tackles, including nine for a loss, plus four pass breakups.
