The Saints (21-10) moved into the second round of the NIT, having won their first two games at Pepsi Arena. Based in nearby Loudonville, Siena improved to 7-1 at its larger home away from home.
Siena will get a chance to improve that mark Tuesday when it hosts UAB for a spot in the quarterfinals. Karangwa had a lot to do with that, as the team's leading scorer bounced back from a poor performance in Tuesday's win over Villanova in which he had just 11 points on 4-of-13 shooting.
Justin Miller added 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Saints, who used a late 12-2 surge to take the lead for good.
Robby Collum scored 27 points for Western Michigan (20-11), which edged Illinois-Chicago for the first NIT win in school history.
The Broncos trailed, 37-29, at halftime but rallied to take a 54-53 lead on a jumper by Jeff Bronson with with 5:26 to play.
Karangwa and Miller combined to score Siena's next 12 points. A free throw by Miller tied it and two by Karangwa provided a 56-54 edge with 4:47 left.
Miller and Collum traded baskets before Karangwa had a layup and Miller made a free throw. Karangwa sank two foul shots, then dunked for a 65-56 bulge with 35 seconds remaining.
Michael Haddix had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Saints, who shot just 39 percent (21-of-54) from the field but made 24-of-37 free throws and held a 49-39 advantage on the glass.
Anthony Kann had 10 points and 10 boards for the Broncos, who shot just 32 percent (24-of-75) and were just 4-of-7 from the line.
