Broncos Start MAC Season With 'W'

Western Michigan opened Mid-American Conference play with a 9-4 victory over Marshall in the series opener of a four-game set at University Heights.

The Broncos scored in six of the nine innings in posting its second-most runs of the season. WMU also pounded out 13 hits, with C Joe Zacharzewski and RF Tom Fabrizo recording three hits apiece.

LF Matt Bolton had a pair of hits and scored three times. SS Adam Rosales put the game out of reach in the sixth, clearing the loaded bases with a two-out double.

"We got some timely hits and had some two-out runs, even though we left nine runners on base," said WMU Head Coach Fred Decker. "The guys were really fired up with this being our conference opener and I thought we played really well defensively."

Pitching continues to be the Broncos' strength, as starter Pat Misch went eight innings, striking out seven batters and allowing eight hits. WMU starters have now gone at least seven innings in six of the last seven games.

WMU and Marshall played a doubleheader tomorrow (7-inns./9-inns.) starting at 1:00 p.m. Brad Mumma (2-2) and Keith Perez (1-1) will pitch for the Broncos.

NOTES: Tom Fabrizio has gone 8-for-13 (.615) at the plate since having his seven-game hitting streak snapped last week ... today's game was the first between WMU and Marshall since April, 2000.
