Broncos Scrimmage Report

Tuesday afternoon, the Broncos football team held their final scrimmage before the Saturday spring football game. With temperatures hovering around the freezing mark and Waldo Stadium still covered with the blanket of snow that hit Kalamazoo on Monday, the scrimmage was held inside the Seelye Center.

The first half of the scrimmage was pretty much dominated by the defense. The defense brought into play their "bend but don't break" philosophy on a couple of occasions. The defensive line recorded 4 sacks in the first half and forced a couple of offensive penalties.

To say that these Broncos aren't ready to play football would be completely wrong. Junior college transfer Shawntey "Killa Tay" Lopez intercepted a Chad Munson pass that was tipped at the line. A short while later the defense forced and recovered a Philip Reed fumble at the 15-yardline.

On the very next drive Blayne Baggett led the second team down to the 4-yardline. However the drive ended there when Daniel Marks fumbled the ball and the defense recovered around ball around the 15-yardline. Just a short while later teammates helped Marks off the field after Marks apparently sprained his ankle. The injury came at the end of a run that put the ball on the 20-yardline.

Jon Drach successfully completed the drive downfield when on the very next play he connected with Kendrick Mosley for a 20-yard touchdown pass. The touchdown was the first on the afternoon for the offense.

The Broncos then took time to work on their special teams giving Adam Anderson and Matthew Sitz some work in. Because of the power and strength in Anderson's leg he has on more than one occasion had punts hit the rafters of the Seelye Center ceiling. Anderson has begun to adjust to it though. He has been able to kick a few punts that even though they would just miss the rafters, they would travel 50-60 yards. Sitz is a young punter from Manistee, Michigan. Sitz is more of a short yardage situation punter at this time in his career.

The offense came to life in the second half, starting with the offensive line when Mark Ottney took out Scott Robinson while protecting the quarterback on the pass rush. A little later Chad Munson connected with Greg Jennings up the middle for a 28-yard touchdown pass.

When Marks was injured in the first half that opened up an opportunity for Ameer Ismail. He didn't disappoint anyone and on the next drive put up a run of 20-yards and then scored a touchdown on a 4-yard run. Baggett decided on the next drive that it was his turn. He led the offense down the field and connected with Chris Chestnut for 13-yard touchdown pass.

A short time later Ismail was helped off the field after what looked like he got hit in the mouth and was bleeding. Ismail was able to walk off and received prompt medical attention and is expected to be okay.

Baggett was able to lead the offense down the field again on a drive that culminated with Tony Scheffler catching a 7-yard pass in the endzone. Steve Wloszek, from Berkley, Michigan capped off the scoring by putting a 37-yard field goal through the uprights. Anthony Apa missed a late field goal when his 27-yard attempt sailed wide left.

The Broncos complete there spring practices with a practice on Thursday and the annual Spring game on Saturday at Waldo Stadium at noon. The first 500 fans will receive a free hot dog and a Coca-Cola soft drink from Campus Concessions.
