Broncos Take Two from Chips

The Western Michigan University Broncos softball team entered Saturday's double header against their archrivals the Central Michigan University Chippewas with an 11 game losing streak to the Chippewas. The streak dated back to the 1999 season. The Broncos also entered the contest with a 27-53 all-time record against the Chippewas. When the day was over the Broncos halted the losing streak and started a 2-game winning streak.

In the first game Laura Stewart, a junior from Plymouth, Michigan pitched a 3-hit shutout to the delight of the 242 fans at Ebert Field. The Broncos scored 3 runs on 7 hits for the 3-0 win.

The Broncos got hits from Angie Fiero, Crystale Gorny, Marie McCarthy, Amy Fleming, Stefanie Scheumann, and Erin Malloch. Fleming collected two hits and drove in two of the three Bronco runs. Pinch running for McCarthy Gibson scored one of the Broncos runs. Mary McCloskey also used as a pinch runner for Gina Dobbs scored for the Broncos. Kelly Barnett was the other player to score for the Broncos.

Stewart pitched 7 innings without walking any batters while recording 8 strikeouts. Stewart improved to 4-3 on the season. Amber Puchalski picked up the loss to drop her record to 9-4.

In the second game the Broncos got two runs in the 5th inning when Erin Malloch and Fiero both singled and were driven in on a single by Jaymie Voss. The Chippewas got one run back in the 6th inning when Brittany Decker tripled and was driven in on a single by Michelle Brander.

Leah Seffernick, a senior from Knoxville, Tennessee, pitched 7 innings. She gave up 6 hits, 1 run, and 1 walk and struck out 8 batters. She improved her record with the 2-1 win to 10-6. Jennie Rasmussen picked up the loss. Rasmussen pitched 6 innings giving up 6 hits, 2 runs, and 1 walk and striking out 4 batters. Her record dropped to 6-4.

The Broncos (18-17, 8-4 MAC) and the Chippewas (19-10, 8-3 MAC) finish up their season series on Sunday when the Broncos host the Chippewas at Ebert Field. Game time is scheduled for 1:00pm.
