Broncos Take Weekend Series

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (May 4) — Chad Tarpley connected on a three-run homer and Keith Perez pitched eight solid innings to lead Western Michigan to a 5-2 victory over Bowling Green in Mid-American Conference action from Warren Steller Field. The victory pushed WMU above the .500 mark (22-21) for the first time this season and into first place in the MAC West Division (15-9).

Tarpley's home run highlighted a five-run third inning that saw the Broncos send 10 batters to the plate. Working with a lead, pitcher Keith Perez kept BG off the board until the eighth inning when All-American Kelly Hunt stroked a two-run homer to end the shutout bid. Perez finished with a six-hitter in 8.1 innings of work, striking out eight. Zach Straayer entered in the ninth and notched his fourth save.

"Keith pitched extremely well today," said WMU Head Coach Fred Decker. "He threw some great pitches when guys were on bases and was able to get us out of some tough situations."

Western Michigan returns to action this Tuesday (May 6), hosting Michigan in the Centennial Celebration Game at Hyames Field. First pitch is 4:00 p.m.

NOTES: Tarpley's homer moved him into a share of the team lead (5) and into a tie for fifth-place on WMU's career list (23) ... RF Tom Fabrizio recorded his 54th career double, which ranks second all-time at WMU, two behind the record held by Kris Gundrum (1996-99) ... the Brown & Gold took three of four games from BG this weekend after entering the series with a nine-game losing streak against the Falcons.
