Irish Luck Runs Out

Friday evening the Notre Dame Fighting Irish headed into Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo as the number one team in the CCHA. Despite have two more power play attempts, an ailing Bronco goaltender and tying the game on the first ever collegiate shot sophomore Eric Marvin ever saw, the Irish still lost in the high scoring affair in front of 3,441 fans..

Jeff Campbell and Jeremy Cheyne led the scoring parade with two goals apiece. Vince Bellissimo had a goal and assist and freshman Ryan Mahrle's defensive play and the goal and assist he contributed helped the Broncos defeat the Irish 8-6.

Scott Foster started the game in the net for the Broncos and stood on his head for the first twenty minutes of the game, but was battling through the onset of the flu bug. In a matter of 2:23 minutes the Irish had tied the game at 3-3. It was the second goal that led to Marvin being put into net for the first time in his collegiate career.

From outside the blue line at the 3:58 mark of the game Brett Lebda ripped a slapshot that Foster in between the legs and went through his five-hole. Foster dropped down to the ice in obvious pain and before getting up and going to the locker room ended up getting sick on the ice. According to Head Coach Jim Culhane Foster lost 5 pounds in just less than 24 minutes.

With his nerves racing, Marvin allowed the first shot he faced to go in the net off a Jason Paige slapshot. Marvin settled down and went on to make 19 saves despite allowing 3 more goals.

The Broncos also got goals from Pat Dwyer and Dana Lattery (game winning goal). The Broncos (8-8-2, 4-5-1 CCHA) and the Fighting Irish are in action again Saturday night at Lawson Arena, faceoff is at 7:05pm.
