Simms A Solid Verbal?

Blake Simms, a 6-1, 200 pound cornerback from Martin Luther King high school in Detroit has given Western Michigan a verbal commitment. How solid is the verbal and what would make the commitment solid? We have the latest.

"I gave Western Michigan a soft verbal," said Simms. "I'm waiting on Boston College to see what they are going to do before I make anything real solid."

Simms expects to hear from Boston College this week to see if they have an offer available to him. Simms considered Toledo for a while as well but that option is no longer available.

"Toledo had a couple of guys commit so that took my spot so I don't have an option to commit there any more," he said.

With 4.48/40 speed, Simms has both size and speed and feels he could fit in well with the Bronco defense.

"I feel like Western is a program on the rise and I really was impressed with their strength and conditioning program," he added. "We had a chance to go over that on my visit and it looked very good."

Simms was hosted by fell Detroit native James Blair who signed with Western Michigan just last year. Blair seemed to help show Simms a good time on his visit last month.

"I was very impressed with the educational side of the visit and also loved the facilities, they were top of the line," said Simms.

Simms says he plans to study Business while at Western Michigan and his long term goal is go get into real estate or even become a sports agent. Simms also says that his parents have not tried to sway his decision one way or another.

"They've pretty much let me make my own choice and haven't pushed me in one direction or another."

As a senior, Simms had five interceptions and 40 tackles on defense while grabbing 20 catches for three touchdowns on offense. "We didn't throw the ball much in our offense," he added. He also returned one kickoff for a touchdown.

If Simms does decide to remain a Bronco commit, he looks to redshirt next season.

"I prefer to redshirt to get used to the program and everything," he said.

Western Michigan is also recruiting Simms' teammate Butler Benton, III and Simms had an interesting update on Benton's recruitment.

"Butler has been contacted by Cincinnati lately and they have a new coach there and he seems real high on them," he said. "I'm not really sure what he is going to do though."
