Broncos Winning Streak Halted

Friday night the Western Michigan University Broncos hockey team faced another hot goaltender in CCHA action and came up on the wrong end of the scoreboard in a 4-1 loss to the University of Michigan Wolverines. In front of a sold out crowd of 4,575 the Broncos were unable to catch a break in a game that saw 17 penalties called for a combined 33 minutes.

With the score 1-1 in the third period a strange turn of events occurred. The Broncos were gaining some momentum and were attacking the Wolverines when the Broncos dump the puck into the Wolverines zone. However on a bad line change by the Broncos Jason Dest was able to wrist a shot past a screened Scott Foster. Dest's goal was the Wolverines second goal and the eventual game winning goal.

With 11:30 left in the game Goaltender Al Montoya went behind the net to stop the puck and mishandled it causing him to get out of position. Dana Lattery coming around to get the puck was forced to run into Montoya at full speed. Montoya went flailing to the ice and lost his helmet in the process. Lattery was given a 5-minute major for charging when he didn't even leave the ice which in hockey a charging call is made when a player leaves the ice to hit an opponent.

The Broncos were able to kill off the penalty for 2:29 was left on the penalty when the Wolverines took out Scott Foster in a similar play but with Foster in the net. With Foster down on the ice David Moss was able to hit a shot off Foster's pads that ended up bouncing into the net for the Wolverines third goal. After the second and third goal the 1,400 students that had been making noise for 2 ½ hour before the game got loud in support of the Broncos and in hopes of sparking a late game rally. However their hopes were dashed just over five minutes later when Brandon Kalenicki scored on a breakaway for the Wolverines.

The Wolverines got their first goal in the second period on a fluke play. Milan Gajic was heading in on a breakaway when his shot was stopped by Foster, but the rebound ended up hitting a Bronco forward sliding on the ice and squirted between Fosters five hole.

The lone goal for the Broncos came at the 4:05 mark of the third period. With Vince Bellissimo along the left boards he took a shot that went behind Montoya in net and Brent Walton tipped it into the net for his 10th goal of the season.

The Broncos (13-9-2, 9-6-2 CCHA) were out shot by the Wolverines (14-7-1, 9-4-1) 35-22. The Broncos were also 0-2 on the power play while Wolverines went 1-5 on the power play. These two teams finish off their home-and-home series tonight at Yost Arena with the faceoff schedules for 7:35pm.
