Broncos Stampede the Wildcats

MARQUETTE, Mich. (Feb. 7) - Western Michigan kept its home playoff ice hopes alive with a 6-2 victory over Northern Michigan in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association contest held at the Berry Events Center. The victory was WMU's first at NMU since March, 2001 and just the second in 13 meetings (2-10-1) over a seven-year period.

The Broncos scored five unanswered goals in the second and third periods to overcome a 2-1 deficit. Jeff Campbell started the rally with a short-handed goal at the 10:01 mark of the second period. Pat Dwyer answered six minutes later on a feed from Lucas Drake in the corner. Brent Walton then snuck a backhander past G Craig Kowalski just 1:48 into the third.

WMU added two more goals in the third. Bellissimo blew the game open with his 11th marker of the season at 13:01. Campbell then added his second tally 46 seconds later off a faceoff.

For the second straight night, WMU held a distinct advantage in shots, 47-26. The Broncos finished with a 79-44 edge in producing a split in the weekend series.

"I was really pleased with our effort tonight," said coach Jim Culhane. "We came out and applied a lot of pressure offensively. This was a key win for us on the road against a good team and will be a confidence builder for us."
