Cross Country Finishes Fourth

HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (Oct. 8) - The shortest road trip of the year produced a fourth-place finish for Western Michigan at the Michigan Intercollegiates. WMU scored 73 points to finish ahead of Mid-American Conference rivals Central Michigan (fifth, 81) and Eastern Michigan (sixth, 111).

Host Grand Valley State won the team title with 20 points, followed by Michigan (39) and Hillsdale (60) in the 14-team field.

WMU coach Kelly Lycan chose to rest some of his top runners as the Broncos made the 45-minute trek to the Grand Rapids area. Freshman Kristi Powers led the way with an 11th place finish overall, covering the four kilometer course in 14:34. Victoria Bassett placed 15th (14:44) with Sharon Blanch (23rd, 14:55) and Rachel Bumann (24th, 14:56) also scoring for the Broncos.

Western Michigan travels to Fayetteville, Ark., next week (Oct. 16) to compete in the Chili Pepper Invitational in the Broncos' final tune-up for the MAC meet on Oct. 30.
