The MAC's Hidden Gem?

After sitting out his freshman year as a redshirt Andrew Hershberger is ready to take the court. He comes into the season as a relative unknown around the MAC and that could be a good thing coming off the bench this season.

Coming to Western Michigan our of Goshen High school Andrew Hershberger saw a log jam ahead of him at forward. "I just felt with the guys we had that my playing time might not be a lot and I could defiantly use a year to develop strength and skill wise," said Hershberger.

Those players ahead of him included MAC Play of the Year Mike Williams who averaged almost 30 minutes per game.

With much of that logjam freed up by Williams' graduation all that stands in Hershberger's way of starting is senior forward Levi Rost. "I'd like to think I'd be one of the first guys off the bench and provide a spark for our team," said Hershberger. "[The coaches expect] when I come in that we don't lose anything at the 4 spot. We shouldn't lose anything when Levi Rost comes out."

So what makes this former Indiana/Kentucky All-Star Game participant a hidden gem? "I'd like to think [I could surprise so teams]," said Hershberger. "There's not a lot said about redshirt freshmen coming into the season so I'm going to come out and play hard."

The real strengths of Hershberger's game are his mid-range shooting and his rebounding abilities. But he would like to work on his "aggressiveness and my ball handling ability could maybe be a little better. Maybe some more quickness."

Head Coach Steve Hawkins thinks that Hershberger will make a significant impact on this season's Bronco team. "There's no question he'll be an important part of what we're trying to get done," said Hawkins. "Andrew is going to get a lot of playing time. I think he's going to have a very good year."

The real question though is, does Hershberger think the Broncos can repeat their success of a year ago? "Yes, I think so. It will be a different type of season but when it's all said and done it will be a successful year," said Hershberger.

Does he have his sights set on a MAC title? "Definitely!"
