Down to Three

Broncos Illustrated has learned that there are three candidates remaining for the head-coaching job at WMU. Gary Darnell's replacement may be announced as soon as Monday.

Sources have indicated that Bill Cubit, Henry Mason and Greg Mattison are finalists for the open coaching position. All three candidates were in town for a second round of interviews including talking with university president Judith Bailey.

Cubit is a former offensive coordinator at WMU, Rutgers, Missouri and this past season with Stanford. He is also the father of WMU quarterback Ryan Cubit. Cubit is the only one of the three candidates that served at WMU under Gary Darnell and was running the Bronco offense when the current spread offense used by the Broncos was installed.

Mason was an assistant coach at WMU from 1991 through 1994 and has been at Wisconsin coaching receivers since 1995. During his tenure at WMU the Broncos led the MAC is passing three of his four seasons.

Mattison is also a former WMU assistant, in this case defensive coordinator. Since his time at WMU in the early to mid-80s Mattison has held the same post at Navy, Texas A&M, Michigan and Notre Dame. Mattison, currently a defensive line coach, is also currently the Fighting Irish's recruiting coordinator.

A final decision and formal job offer is expected as soon as this weekend with an announcement coming as soon as Monday.
