Hockey Recruiting Update

With the signing of national letters of intent by defenseman Chris Frank (Cowichan Valley, BCHL) and goalie Ryan Mensing (Campbellton, MarJHL) and walk-on defenseman Steve Silver committed, Jim Culhane is over halfway towards finishing the class of 2005. Broncos Illustrated gives you the details on those players, three players for 2006 as well as target areas for the remainder of the 2005 class.

With a pair of goals and a dozen assists in 26 games Jim Culhane says of Chris Frank "He has some offensive ability." But that's not really why he was recruited it seems. Already with a whopping 106 penalty minutes – he had 277 last season – Frank was recruited because "he will add toughness to our blue line," added Culhane.

Frank hails from Lynnwood, WA, is in his third season in the BCHL, measures in at 6'1" and 210lbs. and was voted both Most Improved and Most Inspirational player on his team last season.

Ryan Mensing will add a fourth goaltender to the Bronco line-up for next fall to provide more competition to the now established starting freshman Daniel Bellissimo in addition to Scott Foster and Eric Marvin. "Ryan is a quality goaltender who will add depth to our team," said Culhane. "He is fundamentally sound in net."

Also coming in for 2005 is walk-on defenseman Steve Silver, a native of Brighton, MI who plays for Cleveland of the NAHL this season. A stay at home defenseman with some offensive skill Silver will add more size to the Bronco blue line with his 6'2" 220lbs. frame.

The remaining targets for the 2005 class will be a left wing on scholarship and another walk-on forward. The Broncos have only three left-wingers currently on the roster with a pair of centers that shoot left forcing right wing Mike Erickson to play on the left side this season.

With a relatively small class coming in for 2005 and a large class in 2006 Culhane and his staff have been working hard on the class of '06 gaining three verbal commitments so far… Right wing Mark Stockdale (Green Bay, USHL), center Mark Letestu (Bonnyville, AJHL) and defenseman Julian Zamparo (St. Mike's, OPJHL) who was featured earlier this fall in St. Mike's Pipeline Continues

In the case of Letestu, Culhane had revealed that a verbal commitment had been made for '06 on the same day Letestu's name appeared under Western Michigan on a well known recruiting site as a commitment without a year indicated. He currently leads his team – and is third in his league – in scoring with 48 points in 38 games.

Stockdale is originally from Ontario and was recruited while playing for Burlington (OPJHL) last season. He is playing on a low scoring team for the second season in a row and is third in scoring in Green Bay with 13 points in 23 games.

Zamparo is a ‘87 born defenseman that stands 6'2" but could fill out his frame more at only 180 lbs. Scoring nine points in 27 games Zamparo is in his second year of juniors and will have a third before joining the Broncos.

The class of '06 is expected to be a very large one, as the Broncos will be replacing the likes of Mike Erickson, Vince Bellissimo, Brent Walton, Reid Yantzi, Andrew Dwyer, Scott Foster, Eric Marvin and Daryl Moore.

Broncos Illustrated will keep you updated on the hockey recruiting trail throughout the season.
