Bronco Hockey Awards

The best season opening weekend in seven years for the Western Michigan University hockey team continues to get better when the Central Collegiate Hockey Association named two Broncos as players of the week.

Junior Captain Dana Lattery's one goal and three assists against Bowling Green State University (Oct.11-12) helped him secure the CCHA Offensive Player of the Week. With WMU trailing 5-3 on the road with 10:00 minutes left in regulation Lattery scored once and then assisted on senior assistant captain Dave Cousineau's game tying goal. The Broncos went on to win 6-5 in overtime. Lattery then added an assist in the Broncos 3-2 home victory on Saturday.

"We came out flying and held in there to get the wins. Four points are big in the first weekend," Lattery said.

The other Bronco accolades went to freshmen center Vince Bellissimo who, like Lattery, added four points in the first pair of games to claim CCHA Rookie of the Week. Bellissimo scored three times, including both game winners. In Friday's dramatic come-from-behind win the Toronto, Ontario native had the team's first and last goal of the game. Saturday's home thriller saw the 6-1, 190-pound 19-year-old assist on Cousineau's power play tally and again scored the game winner just 2:40 into the third period, beating BGSU goalie Jordan Sigalet.

"I was fortunate. The puck just popped out and I banged it in," Bellissimo said.

Lattery and Bellissimo sit atop the team leaders in points (4) along with Cousineau, who added two goals and two helpers in the weekend sweep.

WMU plays the University of Notre Dame Oct. 18-19 in a home-and-home series. The two squads have yet to lose a game and are the only remaining undefeated teams in the CCHA. Notre Dame stands at 1-0-1 after their weekend against Minnesota-Duluth. WMU heads to South Bend Friday before welcoming the Fighting Irish to Kalamazoo for a 7:05 p.m. start on Saturday at Lawson Ice Arena.
