Broncos Ground the RedHawks

In the second game of a Western Michigan University Broncos triple-header on "Blackout Saturday" the Women's team cruised to a 75-60 victory over the Miami RedHawks. The crowd of 1,075 that were on hand was treated to perhaps the Broncos most dominant half of the season when the Broncos led 48-15 at the half.

Kristen Koetsier and Maria Jilian paced the Broncos in the first half. Koetsier scored 13 and Jilian pitched in 10 points of her own. The Broncos blocked 6 RedHawks shot and Koetsier had 5 of the 6 blocked shots.

Casey Rost started the scoring with a three-pointer and the Broncos quickly found themselves out in front 14-4. After a timeout the Broncos continued to pour it on and went on an 18-5 run.

The Broncos dominated the RedHawks in the first half. The Broncos held the advantage in shooting from the field 18-37 for a .486 shooting percentage compared to the RedHawks 5-32 for a .156 shooting percentage. The Broncos shot 3-9 for a .333 shooting percentage from 3-point range while the RedHawks shot 0-5 from behind the 3-point line. The RedHawks did shoot a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line while the Broncos shot 9-11 for a .818 shooting percentage.

The RedHawks must have made some adjustments because they came out in the second half and went on a run to try to close the gap. Cindi Merrill started hitting her shots as did Heather Cusick and Colleen Day. However the Broncos were able to carry the lead throughout the half.

Kristin Koetsier did her part to ensure the Broncos stayed on top of the RedHawks. Kristin finished with 19 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocks. Maria Jilian and Casey Rost each finished with 15 points. Leading the way for the RedHawks was Kim Lancaster with 12 points and Cindi Merrill had 11 points.

The Broncos finished the game shooting .433 percent from the field making 26 out of 60 shots, Miami shot 21 out of 67 for a .313 shooting percentage. The Broncos also had the advantage in 3-point shooting making 5-15 3-point shots for a .333 shooting percentage. The RedHawks made 6 out of 21 3-pointers for a .286 shooting percentage. The RedHawks did hold the advantage from the free throw line making 12 of 13 free throws for a .923 shooting percentage. The Broncos converted 18 of 26 free throw attempts for a .692 shooting percentage.

With the victory the Broncos 8-4 (2-0 MAC). The RedHawks fell to 6-7 (1-1 MAC). The Broncos next game will be Thursday, January 16 when they host Northern Illinois at 7:00pm at Lawson Arena.
