Broncos Land Top Tailback

On Wednesday the Broncos landed a very prized recruit in Mount Carmel tailback Greg Owens. At 5-10 and 216 pounds (4.50/40), Owens considered several Big Ten and Big XII schools but ultimately chose the Broncos for a variety of reasons. He joins high school teammate Robbie Krutilla at Western Michigan next fall.

Owens made his official visit to Western Michigan back on December 6th but waited until this week to make his decision.

"Coach Cummings and coach Darnell were both here Wednesday and I committed," said Owens, who is being recruited to play tailback. "I really like both of the coaches, especially coach Cummings, he is a trip (laughing)."

With many Big Ten and Big XII schools interested in Owens, what enabled the Broncos to get his commitment?

"I really felt more comfortable there and felt they had more to offer me overall," said Owens. "I loved the school on my visit."

Owens has had some colleges cool on him due to his grades. He currently hold a 1.7 core GPA and has scored a 21 on the ACT. He said he needs to improve his core to a 2.05 to qualify and he is confident he will get it there.

"I'm very confident I'll be qualified and be [in Kalamazoo] in the fall," said Owens.

Owens led Mount Carmel (13-1) to the state title this season with over 1,700 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns.

Owens, who plans to major in Business or Education, talked about his visit host Philip Reed.

"He was great," he said. "He told me a lot of good things and he showed me around and it was great talking to him. He came from a Catholic school and he told me a lot of good things about how the players are treated at Western and he really helped me make my decision."

Owens also participates in track where he runs the 100, 200, 4x100 and 4x200 relays. He talked about the effect high school teammate Robbie Krutilla committing to the Broncos had on him.

"It helped a little," he said. "I listed to him talk about Western and I think it was there in the back of my mind that I'd be able to continue playing with Robbie."

Owens also spoke about his impression of coach Darnell.

"He is a real laid back person," he said. "He's the type of guy I like to be around. He knows a lot and seems like the type of person that likes to pass it on to you."

Owens chose the Broncos over Northern Illinois and Illinois.
