Rookie of the Week

Freshman center Vince Bellissimo (Toronto, Ont.) of the Western Michigan University hockey team has been named Rookie of the Week by the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. This is the second time Bellissimo has received the award; he took home honors the first week of the season (Oct. 14).

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Bellissimo scored two goals, including the game-winner, in WMU's 3-2 victory over 14th-ranked Miami on Friday (Jan. 17) in Lawson Arena. It was his second straight multiple-goal game. Bellissimo added a pair of assists the following night in a 4-1 Bronco win to complete a series sweep against the RedHawks. The four-point weekend moved Bellissimo into a share of second place (11-9-20) in team scoring.

"Vince has been playing very well of late — it's a tremendous honor for him and our program," said WMU head coach Jim Culhane.

A fifth-round draft choice of the NHL Florida Panthers last summer, Bellissimo has been on a tear since the new year, compiling nine points (5-4) over his last five games. He ranks fourth among CCHA rookies in conference scoring (9-5-14).
