Broncos Cap Off the Rockets

A day after the Broncos men's basketball team halted a six-game losing streak to the Toledo Rockets 67-64 the women's basketball team hosted the Lady Rockets at University Arena. The 863 fans in attendance got to see the Lady Broncos put together their best game of the season and slowly pull away in the second half to beat the Rockets 87-60.

The Broncos and Rockets exchanged the lead several times before Curleta Harris unloaded 3 three-point baskets in the last couple minutes of the first half. Harris connected for 4 out of 5 attempts from behind the three-point line in the first half. Harris also led all scorers with 14 points in the first half. Harris also shared the lead for rebound with teammate Lori Crisman with 4 rebounds apiece. Crisman recorded 4 steals in the first half.

Toledo had the advantage over the Broncos in field goal shooting percentage (.591 to .444), three-point shooting percentage (.600 to .444) and free throw shooting percentage (.800 to .750). However the Broncos went into the locker room with a 39-33 lead.

The second half saw a strong defensive effort combined with an offensive barrage by the Broncos. Four Broncos finished in double figures with just one Rocket in double figures in scoring. Harris led all scorers with 21 points followed by Crisman with 18, Kristin Koetsier 13 and Casey Rost with 13. Karin Hoogendam chipped in 13 for the Rockets. Koetsier also recorded 4 blocked shots and Crisman had 5 steals to go along with her 10 out of 12 free throws made. Crisman also led all players with 9 rebounds.

As a team the Broncos out shot the Rockets .492 to .381 from the field. The Broncos also finished shooting better from the three-point line (.412 to .316) and from the free throw line (.769 to .545).

In a much needed win against the leading team in the MAC West Division, the Broncos (14-9, 8-4 MAC) now look to travel to Muncie, Indiana to take on the Ball State Cardinals on Saturday, February 22. The Rockets (17-7, 10-3 MAC) head home to take on the Eastern Michigan Eagles also on Saturday.
