Broncos Still Winless

RF Matt Tribble safely hit in his school-record 20th consecutive game to lead Kansas to 16-7 non-conference win over Western Michigan Saturday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark. The 17th-ranked Jayhawks, winners of five straight, improved to 16-4 while Western fell to 0-8 on the year.

Tribble connected on a two-out, two-run homer in the first inning, as KU put four runs on the board. Kansas added runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings — pushing six across in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Four KU players recorded three hits, as the Jayhawks pounded out a season-high 21 hits.

WMU's biggest inning occurred in the fourth, as the Broncos scored three times. RF Tom Fabrizio drove in a pair of runs with a single to left, while Orlando Colon forced home Chad Tarpley on a ground out to short. WMU also received offensive contributions from Steve Horn (single, double) and DH Matt Bolton (2 RBI).

"They (KU) just hit the ball all over the place," said WMU Head Coach Fred Decker. "We hit the ball better today, but it got away from us early."

Western Michigan concludes its four-game series with Kansas tomorrow afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. CST start. Senior Keith Perez (0-1) is scheduled to start his second game of the year. The contest will also close WMU's nine-game, 11-day spring trip to Mississippi, Arkansas and Kansas.

NOTES: WMU starter J.R. Mathes left the game after 1.2 innings after tweaking his knee ... SS Adam Rosales extended his hitting streak to four games ... Kansas, a member of the Big 12 Conference, is ranked 17th by Collegiate Baseball and 21st by Baseball America.
