We've seen some very good quarterback prospects in the Midwest so far. Pennsylvania's Chad Henne is on everyone's wish list as is Ohio's Brian Hoyer and Indiana's Mike Vlahogeorge.
Another Midwestern quarterback that will be highly recruited is Oak Lawn (Ill.) Richards gunslinger Sean Lewis.
Lewis (6-7, 210) will be a three-year letter winner in 2003. As a sophomore he threw for 1,000 yards and 16 touchdowns in a run orientated offense.
Richards head coach Gary Korhonen knew that he had a very talented young man (Lewis) and he had to build his offense around his strengths.
"When Sean was a sophomore, we brought him up to the varsity." Korhonen said. "I'm an old fashioned coach and I believe that if you bring somebody up to the varsity from the lower levels, he should play.
"We had a pretty good quarterback when Sean was a sophomore but my assistants insisted that we bring him up to the varsity. I told them (assistant coaches) if Sean's coming up, he's going to play.
"Sean split time his sophomore season and last year we put in Purdue's passing offense to use his strengths. As you know, we had an All-American tackle (Mike Jones) here and there wasn't a game that we didn't have college coaches in the stands.
"Every single coach that watched us play commented on how good Sean Lewis looked. Sean has an absolute cannon for an arm, he's smart and he's great under pressure. He doesn't shy away from contact and he's pretty fast for his size."
Is Lewis a candidate for the prestigious "Elite 11" camp? We think so but it doesn't look like he'll get to prove himself.
"I'm scheduled to go to the ‘Peyton Manning Passing Camps' at the same time as the (Michigan) Nike Camp, so I don't know if I'm going to make it or not.
"Northwestern is my only scholarship offer right now," Lewis said. "I'm getting hand-written mail from Notre Dame, Northwestern, Tennessee, Penn State, Iowa and Wisconsin.
"My favorites are Michigan, Penn State, Notre Dame, Tennessee, LSU, Northwestern and Iowa."
Sean Lewis passed for 2,100 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2002. He was named 1st team all-area.
