Newkirk Big On Loyalty

Ladysmith's Mike Newkirk talks about his Wisconsin Verbal commitment.

6-foot-3, 235-pound, athlete, Mike Newkirk from Ladysmith, Wisconsin has given the Wisconsin Badgers his verbal commitment.

After reviewing film of Newkirk this past weekend, its easy to see why the Badgers were quick to offer a scholarship.

Newkirk is a standout on both sides of the ball and projects as a defensive end at the next level.

"When I was growing up, I was a Notre Dame fan," Newkirk said. "Rudy was a big movie when I was a kid and I wanted to go to Notre Dame.

"As I started to get a little older, I was getting more and more into the Badgers. I'm a small town boy and I wanted to stay home and represent my home state.

"I've been going to Wisconsin's summer camp the past couple of seasons and last year coach Palermo told me if I worked hard that maybe I'd get an offer at this years summer camp.

"My dad came into one of my wrestling practices this winter and he had a letter in his hand. He walked over to me, gave me the letter and told me to read it. It was a scholarship offer from Wisconsin.

"It was a pretty emotional moment. I've been working a long time with the help of my dad to reach this goal.

"Wisconsin is my home state, its my home and I'm going to show loyalty to Wisconsin and that's why I committed early."

Mike Newkirk has played fullback, tailback, slot, nose guard and defensive end in high school. Does he have a preference on which position he'd like to play at the next level?

"I'm getting a free education, I'm going to work hard and play hard wherever they want me to be on the field." Newkirk said.
