Does anyone know where Ladysmith, Wisconsin is located? Unless you're from the Badger State, chances are you don't. However, 6-foot-3, 235-pound athlete, Mike Newkirk, may have just put Ladysmith on the recruiting map.
Newkirk has already given Wisconsin his verbal commitment and the Badger staff may have found a hidden gem in their own back yard.
My first impression of Newkirk's film is that Ladysmith doesn't play very good competition. Having said that, it still doesn't change the fact that Mike is a Big Ten caliber type football prospect.
What I liked about Mike Newkirk is his athleticism for his size. He lines up at running back on offense and nose guard on defense. Offensively, Newkirk has above average speed and hands. He can make people miss in between the tackles and he's shifty. Once Mike gets a head of steam going, he doesn't get caught from behind. If he's carrying the ball and gets to the secondary, the defensive backs can expect to receive some punishment.
On defense, Newkirk makes plays all over the field from his nose guard position. He's just way too quick for opposing lineman. Mike blew through a hole on just about every play, blowing up the ball carrier.
Mike Newkirk is a very good athlete that's strong and looks to have better speed than his advertised time of 4.8 seconds. The Wisconsin staff has a verbal commitment from a young man that can help them on either side of the ball. Newkirk could play fullback, tight end, defensive end or defensive tackle at the collegiate level.
In conclusion, Mike Newkirk is a solid prospect that will be a Midwest "Hot 100" prospect in 2003.
Verbal Commit - Mike Newkirk
