One of the top linebacker prospects in the Midwest says he's starting to hear the whispers of a move to defensive end.
"I've been on a couple of unofficial visits where defensive end was brought up," Eric Andino said. "I want to play linebacker but if I make a move to the defensive line, I'll be fine with that."
The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder, from Buffalo Grove, Illinois knows that fans on the internet have seen his 5.2 posted time at the Army (Junior) All-American combine.
"I should've scratched that time but there's nothing I can do about that now. I had a bad day. I've been running a consistent 4.8 since that combine.
Throw the 40-yard time out the window. This kid can play the game of football. No, he doesn't have outstanding straight line speed but he's all over the field making plays.
Andino makes plays sideline to sideline, he is very good at blitzing the quarterback and finishing and he can get into his drops and cover. He's one of the best tacklers we've seen as well.
There's no question that Andino looks more natural at a defensive end position but that will be sorted out when he arrives on campus as a true freshman.
Andino has been making some unofficial visits.
"I went to Iowa and was hoping that they'd offer me a scholarship but it didn't happen." Andino said.
"Coach (Lester) Erb talked about me playing middle linebacker or defensive end. I liked Iowa a lot. They have a very nice campus and the facilities were excellent.
"Illinois, Wisconsin, Northwestern and Indiana are my scholarship offers. My favorites are the schools that have offered me plus Notre Dame, Ohio State and Iowa."
Eric Andino will be a three-year varsity starter in 2003. As a junior, he made 120 tackles and had five interceptions.
Those numbers were good enough to earn Eric all-state, all-area and all-conference honors.
