Welch was offered a scholarship by the Ohio State staff yesterday after watching a highlight tape that has impressed coaches throughout the Big Ten.
The Beechcroft High School senior didn't even sleep on his decison. He committed to the defending national champions immediately.
"Ohio State is my favorite. I don't know what it is about it. I live in Columbus and I grew up watching them. I just got hooked on them," Welch told Badger Nation in early May.
According to Bucknuts.com, part of The Insiders network, the commitment to the Buckeyes was a surprise. Beechcroft Coach Tom Dunlap told the Ohio State website that the interest in Welch has skyrocketed in recent weeks.
"Sir Joseph's Tape just caught people's eye," Dunlap said. "It's what (the coaches) were looking for...he made his skills known by getting to the football. He was like a shot to the ball… it's almost like hitting a baseball – it's like something he's got. Some of his interceptions – it's like a swoop out of nowhere."
The feeling around the Big Ten is that Ohio State is going to be nearly unstoppable in recruiting this year. The combination of last year's national title, with a young, energetic coaching staff and renovated facilities that stack up with any program in the country, OSU should have its pick of the litter this year.
While Welch said he would take some time to make up his mind if OSU delivered an offer, there was little doubt he would eventually decide to stay home and play for the Buckeyes. His early decision will allow other Big Ten schools, including Wisconsin, focus their attention on other prospects.
