UW 2003-04 Hockey Schedule Released

Wisconsin's 2003-04 Men's Hockey Schedule was announced this weekend. The Badgers open the season Oct. 10 at the Maverick Stampede, opening the new arena at Nebraska-Omaha.

Head Coach Mike Eaves and the Wisconsin's men's hockey team has announced its 38-game schedule for the 2003-04 campaign. The season opens Oct. 10 at the Maverick Stampede against Nebraska-Omaha and includes potential contests with half the 2003 NCAA Frozen Four field of 16, moving of the Badger Hockey Showdown to Madison and home contests against WCHA rivals Minnesota, Colorado College and North Dakota.

The Badgers begin the second season of the Mike Eaves era at the Maverick Stampede with an 8 p.m. tilt against host Nebraska-Omaha. NCAA participants Maine and Minnesota will also take part in the tournament, running Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10-11. The games will be the first in UNO's new home arena in downtown Omaha, the Omaha Convention Center and Arena.

WCHA play begins Oct. 17 with a trip to St. Cloud State for a Friday-Saturday 7:05 p.m. series. Wisconsin opens home action at the Kohl Center with a non-conference series Oct. 24-25 against 2002-03 MAAC runner-up Quinnipiac. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m.

Following a trip to Michigan Tech on Nov. 7 and 8, the Badgers begin their home WCHA slate with back-to-back series against two-time defending NCAA champion Minnesota and defending WCHA regular-season champion Colorado College.

The College Hockey Showcase follows with visits to NCAA semifinalist Michigan on Nov. 28 and Michigan State on Nov. 29. The contest against the Wolverines begins at 6:35 p.m. CT, while the game with the Spartans is set for a 6:05 p.m. CT faceoff.

The Badger Hockey Showdown comes to Madison for Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 27-28 at the Kohl Center. The 15th annual event includes 2002-03 CCHA regular-season champion Ferris State, the ECAC's Union and Hockey East-member Massachusetts-Lowell. The Badgers will meet Union at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 27 in their opener. Ferris State will face UMass-Lowell in the first game of the Showdown at 4:30 p.m. The championship and consolation contests will begin at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, respectively.

Wisconsin opens the new year with a series at Minnesota State on Jan. 2 and 3, before returning home for a four-game homestand. The Badgers face Michigan Tech on Jan. 9 and 10, before welcoming Notre Dame to the Kohl Center on Jan. 17-18. The Fighting Irish make their first appearance in Madison since the Kohl Center's inaugural game on Oct. 3, 1998.

The UW embarks on a four-game road trip at Colorado College and Minnesota, then sandwiches consecutive home series against North Dakota and St. Cloud State around an off week during the first three weeks of February. A trip to Alaska-Anchorage closes out a leap year-extended month that leads to the regular-season finale involving the UW's only series of the season against Minnesota-Duluth. The series with the Bulldogs takes place at the Kohl Center.

First-round WCHA play is slated for March 12-14 at campus sites, with the five surviving teams meeting March 18-20 at the WCHA Final Five in St. Paul, Minn.

NCAA regional action fits in March 26-28 at four sites. The Northeast regional is in Manchester, N.H., at Verizon Wireless Arena, while the West regional will be held at World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Northeast and West regionals will be played March 26-27. The Midwest regional at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich., and the East regional at Pepsi Arena in Albany, N.Y., will take place March 27-28.

The 2004 NCAA Men's Frozen Four, April 8-10, will be held at the FleetCenter in Boston.

All Wisconsin games scheduled are tentative and subject to change.
