There was a ton of talent on hand at the NIKE Football Camp in Oakland and Portland (OR) Jesuit linebacker Joey Alfieri was one of the players selected to Fox Sports' all-camp team. Linebackers coach Chris Gizzi said that Alfieri put on the best LB performance at any NFTC this year and earned a trip to The Opening, which is just a 10 minute drive from his high school. Alfieri drew praise from Gizzi for his balance and technique and his ability to react. Alfieri hasn't narrowed his list yet.
South Jordan (UT) Bingham Dalton Schultz measured in at 6-6, 230 pounds, clocked a very solid 4.79-40 (electric) and is already an advanced route runner. He's a very smart player and understands how to get open, how to use his frame and has a great pair of hands to complement the package. Wisconsin offered him earlier in the spring, but I'm told UW ranks Mike Gesicki and Gaelin Elmore higher on its tight end recruiting board.
Oakley (CA) Freedom Joe Mixon had a few drops during the one on one drills, which probably cost him MVP honors. He's an incredible talent either way. Mixon is a big time athlete who runs like a receiver but is strong and powerful. He has great balance, vision and can change direction without slowing down. Mixon is a tremendous competitor as well and as good as he is at running back, could be an ever better prospect at safety. Mixon has said UW will get one of his official visits in the fall.
UW talking to Florida Linebacker
Sitting on four scholarship offers, Gainesville linebacker Matthew Solt says he is talking the most with Iowa State, Cincinnati, Wisconsin and Florida Atlantic, and has offers from Florida Atlantic, Iowa State, Florida Tech and Appalachian State.
"I'm able to cover and run sideline-to-sideline. I'm aggressive in the middle," said the 6-foot-2, 210-pound junior.
Receivers Eliminate Wisconsin
Manalapan High (Englishtown, N.J.) receiver Saeed Blacknall's recruitment has taken focus with a top five, and he plans on visiting those school this summer before making a decision prior to his senior season.
Wisconsin offered in February and had a relationship with running back coach Thomas Hammock but never made a huge impact in his recruitment.
Later in the day, Cincinnati (Ohio) La Salle wide receiver Derek Kief trimmed his list to five: Alabama, Kentucky, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Ohio State. A four-star prospect by Scout.com, Kief, who stands 6-foot-5, 195-pounds, has scheduled visits to Alabama and Clemson early in June along with plans to visit Notre Dame when his team plays in the Irish annual 7-on-7 event.
Kief is also looking at making a return visit to Ohio State, a program many feel the talented receiver might favor and Kentucky, a program that has made great strides in recruiting Ohio during the past several months.
Edwards Not a Kentucky Lock
While he says Kentucky might be his favorite, 5-foot-11, 175-pound Cincinnati defensive back Mike Edwards says he is also considering Louisville, Wisconsin, Vanderbilt and West Virginia. Edwards added that West Virginia is right up there with Kentucky.
"As for making a decision, right now I really don't know. I was thinking I wanted to do it sometime in June. But right now I'm not really sure."
Holland Plans Early Decision
Adding an offer from Wisconsin this week, Jacksonville (FL) Trinity Christian Academy running back Jeffery Holland, has offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Holland has already visited Florida and Florida State, and he's planning a huge summer of visits.
"I am going to visit a lot of places this summer," Holland said. "I will go to schools in South Carolina and North Carolina and then go north from there. I really plan on hitting most all of the schools on my offer list, including Notre Dame."
Holland says he plans to commit shortly after his summer tour.
