The Morning Buzz

Badger Nation looks at the news and notes involving Wisconsin recruits from Tuesday, May 28, including a closer look at the quarterback position in wake of Tuesday's announcement.

UW eliminated by Allen

After Scottsdale (AZ) Desert Mountain quarterback Kyle Allen visited Madison in May, UW personnel thought they hit a ‘home run' with the visit, and felt that the fact that Allen having family in southeast Wisconsin would be a huge pull in his recruitment.

On Tuesday, Allen popped those dreams, tweeting that Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and UCLA. Allen was a pipedream for the Badgers' coaching staff, who were trying to land the top quarterback on the West Coast for the second time in three years. Now UW will have to look elsewhere for that QB.

Who are the other QB options?

Wisconsin has offered two other quarterbacks in the 2014 cycle besides Allen: four-star Toledo (OH) Central Catholic DeShone Kizer and three-star Miami Coral Reef Senior Nicodem Pierre. UW will likely make a huge push for Kizer, who sources say has UW fifth among his top five of Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame and Tennessee.

Pierre wants to make his decision after his senior season, so UW has plenty of time to impress and woo him. Additionally, UW's coaches have watched Novato (CA) San Marin four-star Manny Wilkins and Jacksonville (FL) Ribault three-star D.J. Gillins this spring and either could be next in line for an offer.

Secondary coach Ben Strickland also filmed Franklin (WI) Sean McGuire's workouts to take back to head coach Gary Andersen and offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig. McGuire will camp at Wisconsin next month.

Blackwood No Longer a Secret

Wisconsin was well under the radar when it offered Brooksville (FL) Nature Coast Technical defensive end Rohan Blackwood early in the spring. Problem is that Blackwood isn't a secret any longer.

The 6-5, 210-pound Blackwood now has 17 scholarship offers, according to Brooksville (Fla.) Nature Coast assistant coach Robert Kazmier, and has pulled in some big offers the last few weeks. Miami offered him, followed by Louisville and then got Iowa State, Purdue and Virginia in one day.

Wisconsin has stayed active with Blackwood, as coaches from the Badgers were at his spring game. Even so, it won't be a walk in the park anymore considering his recruitment exploding during the spring.

"He's open and right now everyone is in it," said Kazmier. "He would like to make some summer visits and would be interested in seeing all the major southeastern schools. I know he would like to try and get in as many visits as his parents can afford. USC is pushing really hard to get him to camp out there this summer."

Newell Set to Trim

Four-star Hiawatha (KS) Senior defensive tackle Peyton Newell will be tweeting out a top six this Saturday and hopes to make a final decision toward the end of August.

The Badgers are on the fridge of making his list. Newell, who has over 35 offers, does have family roughly 90 minutes away from Madison and likes the new coaching staff.

Newell had 61 tackles, 37 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, five forced fumbles, two fumble recovered, two blocked PATs and one blocked punt for a touchdown last season on defense and special teams.

Barwick to Decide Saturday

According to our analyst Allen Trieu, Summit Country Day (Ohio) DT Mike Barwick will announce his commitment Sunday at NFTC.

The 6-1, 275-pound Barwick – rated a three-star recruit and No.49 defensive tackle in the country by Fox Sports Next - had the opportunity to chat with secondary coach Bill Busch and Coach Chad Kuaha'aha'a at UW's junior day the week before the spring game, coming away impressed with what the two coaches had to say.

He left without an offer, however, as UW apparently wanted to see him at camp. Barwick will apparently decide between offers from Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Indiana, Kent State, Toledo and Western Michigan.

The decision to announce is a little surprising since he probably could have picked up some BCS offers if he would have done the camp circuit this summer.

UW likely will take 2-3 defensive tackles in the class and already has a verbal commitment from Craig Evans. Conor Sheehy could be considered a hybrid between DT and DE.
