"I talked to Coach Chad (Kauha'aha'a) and (he) basically said that they are really excited about him and want to get in the hunt for Kolton," Dan Miller, Kolton's father, told Badger Nation. "Coach Chad said he knows that they are getting late in the game, but he is the type of player (they) are looking for."
Although Wisconsin has three verbal commits on the offensive line in the 2014 recruiting, the Badgers are looking to add roughly two more scholarship linemen to help build depth at the depleted position. Wisconsin recently hosted five-star offensive guard Damien Mama on an official visit and continue recruiting four-star tackle Kaleb McGary and three-star guards Frank Ragnow and Jeremy Patterson.
But the Badgers have been intrigued lately by the three-star Miller, who is ranked No.47 at the offensive tackle position by Fox Sports Next, and will take advantage of the bye week to watch him workout Thursday.
"He was really excited and thought that was fantastic," Dan Miller said of his son's reaction. "I know you can't see him expression over the phone, but I know his eyes got huge and he felt like wow this is big. It was that kind of reaction."
The 6-8, 280-pound Miller holds 12 offers, nine of which are west of the Rocky Mountains. Named second team All-Sierra Foothill League for his work on defense as a junior, Miller has already had an opportunity to see Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon and Oregon State. Simply due to that fact, Miller is intrigued to take an official visit to see a different part of the country with Wisconsin.
"I talked to Coach Chad and I asked him if he took an official visit when would it be and he told me the Penn State game," Dan Miller said. "I will probably go down with him and his mom. There are a lot of other schools that want him to take an official visit to like Oregon, UCLA, Arizona State and Oregon State. He is not a big hurry and wants to makes sure it feels right on all his decisions.
"I sure he doesn't know much and I don't know much about Wisconsin. They are a powerhouse school being in the top 25 yearly and known for building offensive linemen and sending them to the pros. It can be very beautiful there a couple months. Everybody is there for the school and comes out to the games. It has great football tradition and great academics. The school itself is a great institution and one of the best schools in the nation.
"Kolton likes cold weather and not hot weather (laughter), so Arizona wants him to go there, but it is pretty hot there. Oregon State and Coach Reily is a family kind of guy just like Wisconsin's coach. He doesn't want a coach that will make him feel like a piece of (crap), but someone who will pick you back up."
Miller plans to finish the season before focusing on his recruitment.
"He is built like a tight end," Dan Miller said of his son. "He doesn't have a belly on him (and) his legs are like tree trunks with his arms being much bigger. His bend is great, has great back kick step and gets off the ball well. He doesn't brag and leaves it all on the field. He has been coached by great guys and is only getting better.
"He is also a very honest guy. Wyoming asked him if he was interested and he said not really, but they still offered him. He is not trying to get a bunch of offers but when it comes down to it, he wants to find a good coach, school, education and winning program. He is not a flashy guy at all and just like doing things the right way."
