MADISON - Impressions from Wisconsin's 80-51 exhibition victory over Platteville on Wednesday night at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan started with guards Ben Brust, Josh Gasser and Traevon Jackson and forwards Sam Dekker and Frank Kaminsky. Those five played the first four-plus minutes before UW brought in Duje Dukan, George Marshall, Nigel Hayes and Bronson Koenig, in order. That just shows the youth on this year's Wisconsin team with two players who were in high school a year ago and one player who redshirted last season.

Ryan played 12 of his 15 players in the first half, as UW's head coach is still trying to find a solid rotation heading into Saturday's closed-door scrimmage with DePaul and the season opener a week from Friday against St. John's in Sioux Falls, S.D.

"I'm still trying to find out who's ready to grab the minutes," Ryan said. "Every coach is at this time. You'll see a lot of this in these exhibition games, kind of streaks or runs and subbing and patterns. In the second half, I thought we settled into a pretty good groove and looked better playing off one another."

- It's hard to argue with the impact Hayes could bring to this team from the start. He has tremendous length underneath the basket, without question the weak point on this year's squad, and has the ability to effective and active on the glass.

Hayes finished with eight points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds, including five on the offensive glass. He also added a team-high two steals to go along with two assists and only one turnover. Wisconsin loses a ton of rebounds and point in the paint from the frontcourt, so Hayes gives some needed size.

"Being a freshman and being out there for the first time in front of all the fans, being out there in a game, it was a little uncomfortable, nervousness in me, which is the reason why I missed that early layup," said Hayes. "I settled down, got more comfortable and just realized I'm still playing basketball. I just went from 5,000 fans to maybe 14, 15,000. So it's the same game, just got to get out there, be comfortable and have fun."

- Ryan was adamant after the Red-White Scrimmage last Saturday that junior Josh Gasser was improving every day since coming back from last October's ACL injury. The exhibition was more evidence of that, as Gasser was aggressive on his drives to the paint, drawing contact and making shots, and was pushing for 50-50 balls on the court.

"He looked fine," Ryan said. "He didn't shy away from anything. He can shoot it better than that, but I think that'll come. He hasn't been under the lights too much for long periods of time. Even the minutes that he got up in Canada, it's not the same. So we just hope now and our scrimmage on Saturday he'll look even better and just keep progressing."

- The first player off the bench for Wisconsin, Dukan made his presence early when he hit a wide-open three in transition. Dukan ended up scoring six points and hauling in four defensive rebounds in a productive 13 minutes. Fighting for minutes at the three and the four this season, Dukan will need to hit those type of shots (a shot that helped him earn a late scholarship from Wisconsin) if he wants to be

- Since the end of last season, Jackson has talked about wanting to become a better ball handler, more well rounded as a player and to limit the turnovers. While his shot was a little off (3-for-7) and lost sight of his man a few times, but took care of the ball. Jackson has a team-high seven assists in 26 minutes.

"Tonight he did a real good job," said Ryan. "I just want to see him do that every night."

- With the amount of guards on the roster, Bronson Koenig won't need to carry the scoring burden this year, but certainly will add a dimension to this team with his defense and assists. Koenig didn't score a point in 14 minutes, but had a block, kept his defender in front of him and played aggressive man-to-man defense.

- Sam Dekker is going to score a ton of points this season if he stays healthy, but it will be his defense that elevated him to the next level. Dekker's defense kept him off the floor at times last season, especially early, which drew panic from some fans. Dekker showcased some of his offseason improvements in 22 minutes on the floor on the defensive end. On Frank Kaminsky's coast-to-coast layup off a steal, it was Dekker who deserved the huge assist with solid defense on the play to force a contested past.

- Vitto Brown flashed the athleticism that earned him a scholarship, pinning a shot attempt off the glass after he got beat on a baseline drive. Obviously the second part of that equation won't please Ryan, but the fact that he made a recovery and a play will be important for his development.

- A team that struggled shooting free throws last season, a trait that cost them multiple games last season, Wisconsin went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the first half and 17-for-20 overall.

- The big negative for Wisconsin was its perimeter shooting, as the Badgers missed 11 straight 3-point shots at one point and finished 7-for-22. The open looks were there for Wisconsin but, just like what happened last year at times, simply didn't fall.

Quotable

"Boy, these guys are going to be pretty good," Platteville coach Jeff Gard said. "When you've got the best coach, or one of the best coaches in the country leading these guys, if they're students of the game and they take the approach that we're taking, just keep on getting better every day, this program is going to be really, really good.

"You got great upperclassmen leading the way and setting the example from day one. I know I'd like to have (them)."

Showalter, Smith to Redshirt

Sophomore guard Zak Showalter and junior guard Jordan Smith announced on Wednesday their intentions to redshirt the 2013-14 season for the Wisconsin men's basketball team.

One of nine guards on the Badgers' roster, Showalter appeared in 22 games during his freshman campaign. The Germantown, Wis., native compiled 37 points and added 23 rebounds.

"When I looked at the guard numbers this year, it just makes sense to save this year of eligibility," Showalter said in a statement. "I asked Coach Ryan what he thought of it and he said it seemed like a good idea. I think I'll be able to contribute a lot more my fifth year than I would this season.

"Instead, my job now is to get the veteran guards ready for every game and work as hard as I can in practice to prepare them."

Smith, a native of Orono, Minn., has appeared in 17 career games and will play as a redshirt junior for the Badgers in 2014-15.

"With the depth we have in the backcourt this year and all of the experience returning, I feel like this would be a good year for me to work on my game without using a year of experience," Smith said in a statement. "I'm excited to help the team this year any way I can, while working to getter better and stronger myself."
