Last Time Out

An assertive and aggressive Dekker scored a game-high 20 points to lead No.8 Wisconsin to a 70-64 win over in-state rival Marquette Saturday at the Kohl Center.

Dekker also secured 10 rebounds for his second career double-double in the last three games and was the leader of the five players who scored in double figures for Wisconsin (10-0), which moved within one game of tying the best start in school history and broke a two-game losing streak to its I-94 rivals.

Dekker was one of many players frustrated with last year's performance against the Golden Eagles, a 60-50 loss in Milwaukee. Dekker was making his first career start in place of injured senior Mike Bruesewitz, and finished a frustrating 2-for-10 with three turnovers in 36 minutes.

Dekker appeared to be on pace for another quiet scoring game with two points in the first 10:19 of the game, but scored 18 points (6-for-9) in the final 29:40 of game after Jackson's pep talk.

"He can stretch defenses and attack the rim," said UW coach Bo Ryan of Dekker. "He's a big who can do multiple tasks and defensively he's trying to get better."

"I was pretty aggressive and pretty efficient tonight, for my standards," added Dekker.

The disappointment wasn't limited to Dekker. In his last two meetings against Marquette, senior Ben Brust was 6-for-24 overall and 3-for-13 from 3-point range, including 2-for-9 last year.

Brust finished with 13, doing most of his damage on a 16-6 run in the second half. His 3-pointer forced a Marquette timeout after the lead was pushed to seven and his 5-0 run at the end of the run put Wisconsin up 44-33, the largest of the game.

Even when it didn't go as planned it worked out. Following a steal and on a 2-on-1, Brust's dunk attempt was rejected by the front iron, but Jackson secured the offensive rebound, got the ball to Dekker, who lobbed into the Frank Kaminsky for a dunk and a foul.

It was an example of how Wisconsin was about to out hustle Marquette for 50-50 loose balls and grab 13 offensive rebounds, two things that were missing a year ago in the rivalry.

Wisconsin's other three starters entered double figures and contributed plenty to the cause. Jackson, who also put a lot of heat on himself following last year's loss, finished with 12 points, five rebounds, 6-for-7 from the line and a 7-to-0 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Kaminsky added 11 points, all in the second half, and hit a big 3-pointer from the top of the key after Marquette had trimmed the lead to three with 1:33 remaining. The Golden Eagles never got closer than four the rest of the way.

Gasser added 10 points, went 6-for-6 from the line, had a 4-to-1 assist-to-turnover and drew a ton of praise from his teammates afterward.

"He just does so many little that people don't see in the box score," said Dekker. "He can turn games around with so many little things like that."

Last Meeting

MADISON (AP) - Ryan Evans scored a season-high 19 points, Ben Brust opened and closed a 17-1 first-half run with 3-pointers and Wisconsin routed Milwaukee 74-53 on Saturday night at the Kohl Center.

Traevon Jackson added a career-best 13 points and Jared Berggren had 11 as Wisconsin (8-4) beat its state rivals for the 20th consecutive season and improved to 29-1 in the teams' all-time series.

Milwaukee (3-10) got out to an early 10-8 lead behind Paris Gulley's seven points, but Brust gave the Badgers the lead with his first 3-pointer 6:15 in, and his second put his team up 25-11 with 9:40 left in the first half.

Gulley had 16 points to lead the Panthers, which has lost nine of 10 and four in a row.

Series Notes

Outside the Big Ten, UW has faced only Marquette (120) more frequently than Milwaukee. The Badgers have won 20 consecutive games in this series, owning an all-time record of 29-1 against the Panthers.

Wisconsin and Milwaukee have played every season since the 1992-93 campaign, which coincidentally was the only time the Panthers claimed victory — a 77-72 win in Madison on Dec. 12, 1992.

Under Ryan, the Badgers have a 31-7 (.816) record in the in-state round-robin with Marquette (7-6), Milwaukee (12-0) and Green Bay (12-1). Ryan's teams have never finished worse than 2-1 in the state series. UW is looking for its first in-state sweep since 2010. The Badgers have swept the round robin in 5 of the last 12 seasons.

Ryan has a long history with Panthers head coach Rob Jeter. Jeter played for Ryan at UW-Platteville from 1987-91, captaining the 1991 national championship team. Jeter also served an assistant under Ryan for 10 years at UW-Platteville, Milwaukee and Wisconsin. Most recently, Ryan and Jeter teamed up to coach Team USA to a bronze medal at the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia in the summer of 2009.

When Ryan and Jeter have teamed up on the same side, they own a record of 339-87 (.796).

Milwaukee has a pair of former UW assistants on its staff. Assistant Duffy Conroy spent four seasons working for Bo Ryan as a video coordinator and director of basketball operations (2000-03 and 2004-05). Sharif Chambliss also spent four seasons in Madison, playing for Coach Ryan (2004-05) and working as the video coordinator (2011-12).

Wisconsin Notes

The Badgers are the first team in the nation to reach 10 wins and have gone 10-0 against teams with a combined record of 53-22 (.707) in all other games. UW already owns 5 wins over the ESPN.com RPI top 50 and 8 wins over the RPI top 100. No other team has won more than 2 RPI top-50 wins.

UW has proven it can win in any style this season, topping 80 points in three games and grinding out a defensive battle at Virginia. The Badgers' scoring average (73.2 ppg) is up 8.2 ppg from last season, while the 38 points allowed at UVA were UW's fewest given up in a road game since 1957.

UW owns the nation's longest winning streak at 10 games.

This is just the second-ever season UW has appeared in the AP top 5. It is the 13th week in the top 5, with the other 12 all coming in 2006-07.

UW is 8-0 against the RPI top 100. No other team even played more than 6 games vs. the top 100.

Milwaukee Notes

Milwaukee's 9-2 starts equals the beginning of the 2002-03 season, with those two the best 11-game starts since a 10-1 opening to the 1992-93 campaign.

The Panthers have overcome halftime deficits in four of their nine wins and have dug out of double-digit holes to claim a win three times.

With Wisconsin moving up to fourth in this week's Associated Press poll, the Badgers will be Milwaukee's highest-ranked opponent since the Panthers faced #1 Illinois in the Sweet 16 of the 2005 NCAA Tournament. Wisconsin will also be highest-ranked Panther opponent for a regular season game since December of 2004, when Milwaukee played #2 Kansas in Kansas City. The Panthers have lost three-straight games to ranked foes.

Milwaukee has already used four different starting lineups just 11 games into the season.

Prediction

In 10 wins to start the season, Wisconsin has five road/neutral wins, beating three power schools, a very good Atlantic 10 program in Saint Louis and the preseason pick to win the Horizon League in Green Bay. Those five wins are second behind two schools, and the Badgers will see one of them tonight.

Tied with Harvard with six wins away from home this season, UWM has truly made its mark on the road. The Panthers have four true road wins this season after collecting just one all of last season. The four non-league road wins are the most since the 2004-05 campaign.

Milwaukee has won in six different arenas this season and while it might not have played the type of rugged schedule Wisconsin has, the Panthers have beaten two NCAA tournament teams in Davidson and James Madison away in the first eight days of the season.

That's why when Gasser was asked following Saturday how important it was to have bragging rights over most of the state, the junior reminded the TV reporter that UW has one more in-state game left.

"Milwaukee is playing great basketball right now," said Gasser. "They just had a big win against Northern Iowa. They're going to bring it. This is kind of their Super Bowl. They're going to come in and be ready to go. Coach Jeter knows exactly what he's doing over there, he knows what we're doing over here, so we just have to play hard and execute to get this last one."

Gasser talked about tying his shoes a little tighter before the Badgers played Marquette, and that's the same mindset Green Bay and Milwaukee bring during its annual matches against UW. Following an 8-24 disaster a year ago, the Panthers are playing well thanks to the addition of point guard Steve McWhorter. The junior from Racine sat out last season after transferring back home from Indiana State and has been the team's facilitator with 8.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.

Through 11 games, Milwaukee is scoring 14.2 more points per game, shooting 7.6 percentage points better from the field, 6.5 percentage points better at the free throw line, 3.3 more assists per game and have committed two less turnovers on average.

Those numbers have been greatly impacted by Tiby, as the sophomore has led the Panthers in scoring four times this season and in rebounding six times. He debuted with 20-plus points in his first two games, becoming the first Panther since Ed McCants to score 20 or more points in each of his first two games in Milwaukee. He leads the team in both scoring and rebounding and stands second in assists.

Led by Tiby, UWM has four players averaging between 14.7 and 12.6 points per game, not to mention nine players who have reached double figures and had at least four players break 10 points in eight games. In a way, they are similar in a lot of was to what Wisconsin is doing offensively.

The big difference between the two teams is the schedule. Wisconsin is third in the country in RPI following its big wins, having a nonconference strength of schedule of 30. Milwaukee's RPI is No.116 while its nonconference SOS is 310. The Badgers have eight wins over the RPI top 77. Milwaukee's best win is against NO.109 Davidson, and the Panthers also have a loss to Loyola (IL) on its schedule – the Ramblers are 260 in the RPI.

Milwaukee hangs with Wisconsin, but the Badgers' balance, defense and aggressiveness are too much. UW wins by 16.

Worgull's Record: 7-3

Points off Prediction: 86 (8.6 per game)

\"He can stretch defenses and attack the rim,\" said UW coach Bo Ryan of Dekker. \"He's a big who can do multiple tasks and defensively he's trying to get better.\"

\"I was pretty aggressive and pretty efficient tonight, for my standards,\" added Dekker.

\"He just does so many little that people don't see in the box score,\" said Dekker. \"He can turn games around with so many little things like that.\"

Ryan Evans scored a season-high 19 points, Ben Brust opened and closed a 17-1 first-half run with 3-pointers and Wisconsin routed Milwaukee 74-53 on Saturday night at the Kohl Center.

\"Milwaukee is playing great basketball right now,\" said Gasser. \"They just had a big win against Northern Iowa. They're going to bring it. This is kind of their Super Bowl. They're going to come in and be ready to go. Coach Jeter knows exactly what he's doing over there, he knows what we're doing over here, so we just have to play hard and execute to get this last one.\"
