Wisconsin has taken great pride in establishing a powerful walk-on program; having a tradition of walk-ons that include wide receiver Jared Abbrederis, Super Bowl champion Chris Maragos and NFL defensive player of the year J.J. Watt. With The Badgers have started handing out a few preferred walk-on opportunity and had a potential candidate on campus this past weekend in Eau Claire (WI) Regis senior offensive guard Nolan Kern.
“It was really fun,” Kern told BadgerNation. “We got to eat breakfast outside, play bean bag toss and watch a highlight video. I also got to talk to Coach (Ben) Strickland, Coach (T.J.) Woods and Coach (Gary) Andersen. We then had an academic presentation, took a tour of the weight room then went on the field for pre-game.”
Should the Wisconsin coaches offer the 6-3, 315-pound guard a preferred walk-on, it will definitely be something Kern will have to consider if presented the chance to be a part of the 2015 class.
“They said nothing is final yet, but it will probably be a preferred walk-on,” said Kern. “I really like the opportunity. I love the tradition behind it and would be excited. I love the fans and when I have worked with the coaches at camps and I liked the way they coached.
“My dad turned down that opportunity and still regrets it, so it is definitely something I will consider. I will probably will commit if they do offer me a walk-on spot.”
