The Wisconsin coaching staff went around the state the past few days talking to some of the top talent, including Wausau (WI) West senior linebacker Jake Whalen. Offensive Coordinator Joe Rudolph told the hard-hitting Whalen they would determine his status with Wisconsin by Sunday night, and he found out where things lied after a phone call from him.
“I was offered a greyshirt offer for fullback,” Whalen told BadgerNation. “I talked to Coach Rudolph and he told me that he loves my mentality and what I bring. (He) wants to being me in under Derek Watt’s spot when he’s done.”
The 6-2, 220-pound Whalen is getting mostly recruited as a linebacker, but the Badgers see him as their next big blocker and it was something he didn’t see coming.
“I never knew I was being recruited as a fullback by them till now, so a little shocking,” said Whalen. “I am not sure yet how I feel, but I have my official visit to Iowa next weekend, and I’ll talk to my family first before I make any decisions.”
Whalen currently doesn’t not have a top list.
