Making the NCAA tournament has become such a routine for the University of Wisconsin under head coach Bo Ryan that it’s hard to get super surprised on Selection Sunday. This year was slightly different.
Tying the program record with 31 wins and winning both the regular season and tournament titles, Wisconsin was rewarded for its valor with the program’s first one seed in the 68-team tournament, getting a matchup with Coastal Carolina in both team’s opening tournament game in Omaha, Neb.
This will be the third time Wisconsin will face the Chanticleers out of the Big South. The Badgers have won both matchups at home, the most recent meeting being a 92-54 in 2005.
Finishing in a three-way tie in the Big South regular season, Coastal Carolina (24-9, 12-6) beat Winthrop, 81-70, in the tournament championship game to earn the league’s automatic bid. Making their fourth trip to the NCAA tournament in second history and going consecutive years for the first time in school history, Coastal Carolina got people buzzing when they led top-seeded Virginia by five at halftime in the opening round last year.%
