Wisconsin Continues to Show No Quit

Another second-half tournament deficit equaled another gutsy performance by the University of Wisconsin, as the top-seed Badgers are back in the Elite Eight after come-from-behind 79-72 victory over fourth-seed North Carolina at the Staples Center.

LOS ANGELES - Survive and advance is the name of the game.

The history of the NCAA tournament is littered with perceived great teams who didn’t win a national championship, let alone make a Final Four.

What category the University of Wisconsin falls into is still being written, but the chapters already in the book make one thing clear: the Badgers have the ability to sense urgency and do something about it.

“Good teams know how to win,” said junior Sam Dekker, whose big night on the national stage gave top-seed Wisconsin a 79-72 victory over fourth-seed North Carolina at the Staples Center Thursday night in a West Regional semifinal. “That’s the thing. There’s a lot of teams that are talented, just as talented as us, but they don’t know how to win at times.

“Coach (Ryan) says a winning mindset brings a winning attitude wherever it is. That rubs off and you know you are going to win no matter the score.”

On a night where his teammates had to fight for their offense, Dekker carried the burden. His 23 points (10-for-15) were a career high and his 10 rebounds represented his first double-double of the season.

Frank Kaminsky finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds, Nigel Hayes added 12 points and Traevon Jackson scored four points in his return to the lineup, as the Badgers (34-3) advanced to Saturday’s regional finals (5:09 p.m. CT).

Waiting for them again is second-seed Arizona (34-3), which bested sixth-seed Xavier, 68-60, and will have some measure of revenge on their minds from last year’s 64-63 overtime regional finals loss. The only difference is the Wildcats were the top seed last year and the game was played just down the road in Anaheim.

“We’re just resilient,” said sophomore guard Zak Showalter, who again provided a lift with six second-half bench points. “We don’t want to go home. We want to stay here. We want to get to Indianapolis. We’re one game away.”

With a lot of his players’ bloodied and bruised, Wisconsin associate head coach Greg Gard picked up the final box score, grabbed a pen and started to circle some numbers.

The first he went for was points in the paint, an area where North Carolina (26-12) averages 37.5 points and where Wisconsin held the Tar Heels to only 28. Next he circled Wisconsin’s turnovers against the Tar Heels’ pressure. It was the number five, which included only one miscue from UW’s guards against 10 assists.

Lastly he circled the shooting numbers of Hayes, Kaminsky and Bronson Koenig, who shot 10-for-31 overall and 3-for-19 in the first half. His reaction when he was done? Gutsy.

“They have huge heart,” said Gard. “They are very talented and everyone talks about that. Obviously we’ve got really good players, but deep down they’re a group that has a lot of fight in them. They won’t quit. They won’t back down when things get a little rough. We’ve had it during the year, this tournament run, they’ve been able to dig deep and circle the wagons and rally back.”

The stats suggest this is another Ryan defensive masterpiece. The Badgers are allowing just 56.8 points per game, good enough for 10th nationally. In reality the Badgers have had to band together to make timely plays and rely on an offense that averages 124.9 points per 100 possessions, the top-ranked unit according to kenpom.com.

So when the scoring offense finally went away, the Badgers found themselves in trouble, down seven with just over 11 to go.

“We’ve been down before,” said Koenig, “so it kind of reiterates how resilient of a bunch we are and that we can come back from deficits.”

Like Wisconsin’s team-first philosophy, the points came from many sources: Koenig hit a 3-pointer, Showalter attacking the rim and battling through ramps, Josh Gasser with a 3-pointer and the Badgers going 14-for-15 from the free throw line in the second half.

And of course there was Dekker, who scored 15 of UW’s 31 first-half points and used his athleticism to dunk or finish at the rim.

t

“I just tried to stay on attack mode,” said Dekker. “My show wasn’t falling like I’d like it to be, so I just tried to take it to the lane more and get some east buckets and just cause a difference in there.”

After shooting 36.7 percent in the first half, Wisconsin averaged 1.55 points per possession in the second half, closing the final 6:20 on a 23-12 run.

“This group right here handles adversity as well as any team I’ve ever coached,” said Ryan.

Gasser said Wisconsin’s defense its first 30 minutes as “wasn’t great,” especially when the Badgers’ goal of limiting the Tar Heels’ transition opportunities resulted in Wisconsin watching North Carolina scored its first four points off dunks … in transition.

“We didn’t stick to the game plan the way we wanted to,” said Gasser. “We just couldn’t get consecutive stops it felt like. We couldn’t get three-four in a row like we usually do.

“But the last couple minutes when we needed to, just like we’ve always had in the past, we found a way to get it done.”

Brice Johnson and Justin Jackson each had 15 points for North Carolina, which wasn’t able to operate at full efficiency. While a knee injury limited Kennedy Meeks (4 points, 1-for-4 shooting), Gasser limited guard Marcus Paige to 12 points on 4-for-11 shooting, including two deep 3-pointers in the final 1:42 that kept the Tar Heels afloat.

Those were the only two shots North Carolina made in the final five minutes.

“Josh Gasser is a guy who, whatever the assignment is, he’ll take it on,” said Ryan. “And he’s never wavered. Never wavered at all.”

Wisconsin outrebounded North Carolina (35-28), grabbed more offensive rebounds (12-9), outscored them in the paint (36-28) and held the Tar Heels to one fast-break point after having nine in the first half, a tremendous accomplishment against one of the best post teams in the country.

And yet, with 40 minutes standing between them and a second straight Final Four (and another likely rematch with Kentucky), the Badgers are hungry for more.

“We’re all saying to each other we really didn’t play that well, and we were still able to win this game,” said Hayes. “If we all play to our abilities and put a complete game together, we could be really dangerous.”
