Suwanee (GA) Peachtree Ridge cornerback Baylen Buchanan always had a high opinion of the University of Wisconsin. But without having the opportunity to tour the campus or meet the coaching staff, the 5-11, 188-pound prospect had a hard time really grasping what the program was all about without.
That fact was one of the main reasons why Buchanan wanted to visit the program before the start of his 2015 season, a short visit he said lived up to his expectations.
“I enjoyed it a lot,” Buchanan told BadgerNation. “It was nice, real nice. I got to see the facilities, meet with some of the coaches, the strength and conditioning coaches and really meet everybody.”
Wisconsin is still in search of cornerback commits in the 2016 recruiting class, and Buchanan has become a high priority of running back coach John Settle since he offered him in the spring. Recently, defensive backs coach Daronte Jones has also become involved in his recruitment.
“It’s been going good,” said Buchanan. “Getting up here, I feel, was a step forward in our relationship. We’re going to talk way more and keep in touch way more now. I started talking to Coach Jones probably a week ago, so we’re just starting to get to know each other.”
Buchanan also was given a strong sale’s pitch by Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst.
“He’s very family oriented and has a great personality to be around,” said Buchanan.
While many things stood out to Buchanan on his trip, he said the people were the biggest surprise.
“People are all about football here at Wisconsin,” said Buchanan. “You’ve got the Wisconsin games on Saturday and then you have Green Bay on Sunday. Everybody is all about football, so they will take care of you.”
Still committed to Louisville, Buchanan – ranked a three-star cornerback and the No.42 cornerback in the country by Scout.com – said he’s going to take more visits in the fall. He has already planned an official visit to Oklahoma and might take visits to Arizona (a school that would likely offer him once he arrives on campus) and Nebraska.
“I’m just enjoying the process right now,” said Buchanan. “I’m still looking at other schools, even though I am committed. I just want to make sure I have no regrets, making sure I am making the best decision and taking the best opportunity for me in my future and life after football.”
He also might return to Wisconsin, as the Badgers are now right in the mix.
“They definitely improved where they stand with me,” said Buchanan. “When you get offers and you haven’t seen the school yet, you really can’t put them anywhere. It was definitely a good trip. They stand with a good place with me right now.”
