Wisconsin Fall Camp Preview - Offensive Line

With graduation and injuries preventing the building of chemistry in the spring, Wisconsin's offensive line has a lot of work to do before facing Alabama.

There are usually two questions that get brought up in conversation about the Wisconsin offense by fans who patiently wait for each season to begin, usually pertaining to how effective the passing game will be and if it can take pressure off of the running game. But this year the main question swirling around Camp Randall is if the inexperience of the Wisconsin offensive line will hurt the Badgers

Wisconsin has been referenced as “O-Line U,” which is understandable with 10 former Wisconsin offensive lineman currently on NFL rosters. That number in part represents how consistent UW’s line has been over the last few years, as Wisconsin has been able to insert a new player into the group and not miss a beat. That might not be the case this season.

First year offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Joe Rudolph will need to find who the answers are to replace the combined 123 career games that were played by seniors Dallas Lewallen, Kyle Costigan and Rob Havenstein. It’s a reason why Wisconsin ranked third in rushing offense (320.1 ypg) and seventh in sacks allowed (13).

“We are not nearly where we want to be at the offensive line position, but I think there are some guys who have grown and done some good things,” Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst said. “Right now we don’t have the depth that we would like to have, but we’ve got guys who did a lot of things this spring who learned, and I think they grew.”

It is difficult to replace that experience, especially since projected starters Ray Ball (fifth-year senior left guard), Michael Deiter (redshirt freshman right guard) and (redshirt sophomore right tackle) Hayden Biegel have played in 37 career games. Break that number down even farther and notice Ball has played in 31 of those games and doing so mostly on special teams and in mop up duty.

Throw in the fact that Wisconsin has more gap blocking schemes from a season ago, it’s close to a complete overhaul.

It’s one of the main reasons Rudolph – the fifth offensive line coach in five years at Wisconsin - was actively moving and switching players along the line during the spring, a move embraced by his youthful group of eager participants.

“It has been pretty easy,” Deiter said of adjusting to Rudolph. “He has a lot more energy and is more upbeat. He is more intense, it has been fun getting to know him and it has been fun working with him. I like him a lot.”

Although the depth is young (Wisconsin is only projected to have 13 scholarship linemen in camp), Rudolph will rely heavily on left tackle redshirt senior Tyler Marz and junior center Dan Voltz, who have combined to play in 62 career games, for leadership.

“I just think I need to lead more with the three or four guys that need to step up in these positions,” said Marz, who was a consensus honorable mention All-Big Ten player last year. “I am going to take them under my wing, whether that’s meeting more on the side or staying after practice in the summer workouts and work on any little thing that they need help on the most.”

Ideally spring practice would have served as the time Wisconsin would have started to break in the potential three new starters and start building chemistry. But Ball and Voltz, who was named to the Outland Trophy and Rimington watch list, both had to sit out portions of spring practice due to injuries.

“It has hurt it a little but it has also been good to see who else can play,” Deiter said about the health of the line. “It has been a good opportunity to get guys in and see whether or not we can play. It has been bad that Dan can’t practice at center and that we can’t get that chemistry, but it has also been a really good thing that more guys have had to step up and have them prove they have the ability to play.”

Competition only brings out the best in players and having three spots open on could only mean good things as the younger players battle for playing time.

“It’s competitive and it’s got to remain that way,” Rudolph said. “You’re looking for opportunities for guys to step up and take things over. You want to give them opportunities to do that and you want a young player, who feels like a young guy, to realize that this (chance) might be me.”

“You can see that second (unit) is all freshmen,” he added. “When you’re trying to express to them the value of a rep in practice, individual or team, that value means a lot more when you’ve struggled on scout team for two years and you’re fighting to get on the travel squad. It’s my job to help them feel that and understand that. They’ve got to step up into those roles to create depth.”

It is unlikely that the starters on the offensive line will stay healthy throughout the season, a point reinforced last year with Costigan hobbling through the series and Voltz having to leave the final two games of the season with injuries.

Voltz’s injury benefited Ball the most, allowing him to get reps at left guard. After struggling mightily against Ohio State, Ball recovered and helped Wisconsin rush for 400 yards in the bowl win over Auburn. Chryst said Voltz will be brought along slowly in fall but expects him to be ready for the 2015 opener against No.3 Alabama.

Ball acknowledged his fitness level, including his lower-body strength, was much better in the bowl game than it was in the Big Ten title game and made a difference.

“They did a great job taking care of my knee,” Ball said. “I was out only eight or nine days. I told myself: 'You work so much during the year and you want to do what you can for the seniors. No matter what, you're going to be willing to work for them.’ If anyone went down, I knew that I needed to step up and play and do my job. That’s what we all preach, do your job and we’ll be fine.”

The best battle for playing time will likely come at right guard between Deiter and junior Walker Williams. Able to hang on to his redshirt a season ago despite the last-season injuries in front of him, Deiter received great tutelage from the starters a season ago, allowing him to feel more comfortable practicing with the scout team or the starters.

“I feel a lot more experienced this year compared to last year,” said Deiter, who can play either guard or center. “I don’t feel as nervous as I was last year and it has allowed me to focus more on my play then possibly me focusing on making a mistake in my game.”

Williams (six career games) is one of the older backups on the unit but has primarily played at tackle throughout his career. Now on his fifth offensive line coach, Williams feels that he’s finally in a position where he can compete for a starting role.

“I really feel I am grasping this offense a lot quicker than offenses in the past,” said Williams. “I am just feeling a renewed confidence. Coach Rudolph has given me a brand new slate, and I feel I am ready to get some serious reps.”

While the right guard might be the biggest position battle, right tackle appears to have the biggest question mark. While the job to replace consensus first-team All-Big Ten selection Haventstein appears to be Biegel’s to lose, the sophomore only appeared in six games last season. And while he’s slightly undersized, Biegel has impressed the coaches with the way he’s taken advantage of the reps.

“I love the way he works, and he has a true toughness about him, which I love,” Rudolph said of Biegel. “There are certain things he really has to work on. When he’s focused on the details of what he needs to work on, he can be pretty darn good. When he doesn’t, he’s not as good as we need him to be.”

Wisconsin has started rebuilding its depth from within the state with Jacob Maxwell (Greendale) and George Panos (Hartland) entering their redshirt freshman season and worked on UW’s second-string line in the spring. Classmate Micah Kapoi (Kapolei, HI) also is in the mix, but the Badgers took a hit when walk-on Trent Denlinger had to walk away from football because of “abnormal blood vessels.”

Wisconsin signed three offensive lineman in the 2015 recruiting cycle but only one (Seymour four-star guard Jon Dietzen) enrolled early. It is still too early to tell but he could follow a similar path that Voltz and Deiter did when they enrolled early, made the travel roster their first season and charted offensive plays during the game.

“I think I did pretty well (in the spring),” said Dietzen. “I caught on to the offense a little bit quicker than I thought I was going to. I was a little nervous how that all was going to work but it worked pretty well … I got a feel for the speed of the game. I probably haven’t caught on to the speed of the game yet. I am still coming out of that high school speed. That’s a lot different. I think I know the playbook a lot better than I thought I would at this point.”

Kevin Estes (a three star prospect by Scout.com) and David Moorman (a four star prospect ranked No.290 in the Scout 300) will battle for back up positions along the offensive line. Regardless whether or not the two play this season, both have the ability to make an impact down the road on the offensive line.

Despite the youth and lack of continuity along the Wisconsin offensive line in the spring, Deiter believes his unit has a chance to live up to the reputation of past offensive lines at Wisconsin.

“I think we can be a typical offensive line for the University of Wisconsin,” Deiter said. “We will be big, mean, nasty, and good.”
