Wisconsin Fall Camp Preview - Defensive Line

One of the main positions former head coach Gary Andersen and his staff recruited to, Wisconsin's young defensive line is hoping to prove that age is just a number in 2015.

In Dave Aranda’s first two years as the defensive coordinator at Wisconsin, he has been able to build one of the more consistent defenses in the country. Coaching a bunch of athletes recruited to play in the 4-3 defense as opposed to his 3-4 scheme, Aranda elevated the team’s total defense from 15th to 7th in his first year and to fourth last season, giving up 294.1 yards a game.

But if Wisconsin is going to continue to be one of the better defenses in college football and take the next step as a program, Aranda and first year defensive line coach Inoke Breckterfield will require more production from its defensive line than past seasons.

That’s not to say the unit didn’t do its job a season ago. In reality Wisconsin finished in the top five in every major defensive category in the Big Ten, not to mention that the line was a reason why Wisconsin caused 64 three-and out-drives, the third most in the NCAA. But from a statistical standpoint, UW’s front generated only four sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss.

While the unit created holes for the linebackers to gobble up most of the plays, Breckterfield wants to make sure his unit is not left out of the mix this season.

“I really just told them to cut it loose,” he said. “That’s really been the message from day one with Coach Chryst telling them to cut it loose. I think they turned a corner (after spring break) and played a little faster. Obviously we have a lot of room to grow and work to do, but I think they had fun out there.”

Wisconsin lost two seniors off last year’s group in Warren Herring and Konrad Zagzebski but each missed time because of injuries. While the pair going down against LSU in the season opener contributed to the Badgers falling short against the Tigers, Wisconsin saw a number of younger players be assigned meaningful snaps at crucial junctures. After some growing pains last year, the results are better depth and experience.

“We just have to keep doing our jobs,” redshirt sophomore end Chikwe Obasih said. “Coach Breckterfield wants us to be ourselves. We’re not just doing it for the linebackers anymore. We’re trying to grow within ourselves and do our job and grow into playmakers and not just role players.”

Wisconsin does have the right personnel along the defensive line to improve those numbers. Consistently getting in teams opposing backfields starts with the defensive end tandem of Alec James and Obasih, the latter leading the defensive line in tackles for loss (2.5) and sacks (two).

The first step to show they have improved was during spring, an assignment they passed by registering 3.5 sacks and five of the team’s 15 tackles for loss in the scrimmage. Although that production came against an inexperienced offensive line, it is something the group can build off of going into camp.

“We took a step back,” Obasih said of the approach to spring football. “Last year we felt rushed to get there and make sure everything was ready to fit the scheme since we had a lot of new guys coming into the front. This spring we took a step back and we were taught the techniques. We were taught everything that we need to do and what we want to do in order to have success this fall.”

With his defensive line able to stay relatively healthy throughout spring, developing more chemistry and comfort with each other than a season ago, Breckterfield’s big goal in camp will be determining the right combinations for the season, beginning with No.3 Alabama on Sept.5 in Arlington, Tex.

In the center of the line, redshirt junior Arthur Goldberg received the majority of reps when Herring missed two months following a knee injury. He also had the ability to flip back and forth from defensive end to nose guard depending on schemes and formations.

Sophomore Conor Sheehy is arguably the most versatile of the group, having the ability to be a run-stuffing nose tackle or a pass rushing end. Much like the previous coaching staff wanted to do with Herring, Sheehy believes he’ll be able to line up at all three spots along the line and be effective.

“Hopefully I’ll be able to play both throughout my career here,” Sheehy said. “That’s what I want. I want to be versatile and help the team with whatever it needs. I am staying around 285 (pounds) and playing both.”

Opposite Obasih, James may be best suited to start with his primary strength of rushing the passer. In order to do earn that spot, James has to show the ability to consistently play strong against the run, something he struggled with a season ago.

James ended spring practice with the first team defense, partially due to Goldberg getting injured and missing the last part of spring. Goldberg’s injury opened up more practice reps for James and got him more comfortable with the new schemes.

“You start to pick up on things, and you can look at other things and focus on what you have to do,” said James, who registered 1.5 tackles for loss last season. “You can look at formations and recognize what they are going to do or tendencies, stuff like that, so it is a pretty good feeling knowing that you can just kind of focus on making plays on the football field.”

After redshirting last season, nose tackle Jeremy Patterson could be counted on to give Goldberg and Sheehy breathers throughout the game. Patterson has the right body type to help engage blockers to allow the linebackers to make plays in the backfield and is more of a true nose tackle compared to the veterans in front of him.

The youth on the defensive line may create the headlines but fifth-year seniors James Adeyanju and Jake Keefer are the clear leaders of the group. Their names haven’t appeared often in the stat sheet (20 combined tackles in their career), a result of being buried on the depth chart, but both have their first real opportunity to compete for considerable playing time this season.

Wisconsin has rebuild the depth of its interior defense with Patterson in 2014 and tackles Kraig Howe in Olive Sagapolu 2015. Howe is a big bodied brusier who flipped his commitment from Pittsburgh after the coaching change, and Sagapolu is extremely athletic for his size (6-2, 295 pounds) with the ability to do a standing backflip, thanks to his cheerleading background at Mater Dei High School. Sagapolu has a nasty streak to him and can track down opposing ball carriers. If he can translate his skills over to the college game and learn quickly, he may be in line to receive some reps if need be.

Wisconsin other defensive line signee in the 2015 recruiting cycle was three-star defensive end David Pfaff. Possessing a mean streak with a good motor, Pfaff may need a redshirt year so he can continue to add good weight and learn Aranda’s defense before making a positive impact.

While the production may not have been where it needed to be a season ago, Wisconsin’s youthful unit is looking forward, only using last season as a motivation to improve and take the next step as a unit.

“We can be real good and we could have an athletic defensive line,” James said. “I’m real excited to see what we can do this coming year because we have a lot of guys who are hungry to make a name for themselves. Last year for the returning guys, we didn’t have as much stats that we would want. We really want to make a name for ourselves. We are all helping each other, so I think this could be a real strong group.”
