Wisconsin Fall Camp Preview - Secondary

Returning three multi-year starters, adding a 6-6 safety to the mix and some experienced depth, Wisconsin's secondary might be the best in the Big Ten.

It is not easy to make a position switch late in your football career, especially when you’ve failed at the position you were originally recruited to play. But in the case of redshirt senior Tanner McEvoy, it will be hard to keep the 6-6 prospect out of the starting safety spot with the athleticism, talent and ability he has showcased in his three seasons on campus.

With McEvoy switching to safety after his unsuccessful season at quarterback, the senior joins safety Michael Caputo and cornerbacks Darius Hillary and Sojourn Shelton to form one of the best secondary units in the Big Ten.

“Tanner knows the game inside and out,” Caputo said. “I trust that he knows what’s going on and trust that he’s going to be there...He has a real good football sense, so it’s an automatic trust that he’ll be there. It makes him accountable. He makes it fun for me, and I’m sure he makes it fun for the rest of the guys on the team.”

Although his five games as a starting quarterback stick out like a sore thumb, McEvoy has made his greatest contributions in the secondary. He appeared in 11 games as a safety as a redshirt sophomore, registering 27 tackles, and made some critical tackles at the position to help the Badgers to their Outback Bowl win over Auburn.

In those 12 games at safety, it was clear that McEvoy belonged on the defensive side and showed enough to enter camp as a safety starter, meaning the projected starting four have combined to play 133 career games.

“Ever since I got here people have said that (secondary is) our weak spot, for whatever reason,” McEvoy said. “But this year we have a lot coming back and we have a lot of confidence. It’s the same defense so that’s fun to carry it over and not have to learn something new. I think we have a great group and we’re going to make the most of it.”

But experience doesn’t always equal success. Wisconsin had three returning starters last season in the secondary and struggled all season to consistently create miscues. The secondary finished the season with four of the team’s six interceptions, which ranked 13th in the Big Ten.

Caputo and sophomore safety Lubern Figaro are the only members returning to the secondary who registered an interception last year, finishing with two each.

Although the turnovers weren’t there, the production certainly was. Wisconsin allowed a league-best 168 passing yards and saw Caputo earn consensus second-team All-Big Ten honors after finishing with a team-leading 106 tackles, seven pass deflection, six pass breakups and six tackles for loss.

“There were a ton of opportunities, there’s always a ton of opportunities,” said Caputo, who was named to the Bednarik, Nagurski, and Jim Thorpe watch list. “We just have to capitalize on plays on the ball and that’s what we have to do, whether it’s recovering fumbles, striping the ball more, interceptions, getting PBU’s, whatever it is. We just have to make more plays on the ball.”

Not only was the four interceptions a disappointing number for the unit, the fact that the cornerbacks didn’t register any was a shock. It was especially disappointing for Shelton after he recorded four as a true freshman. Admitting he put too much pressure on himself at the beginning of last season, Shelton was able to put together a solid spring camp and appears poised to regain his freshman swagger.

“It is surprising,” Shelton said of no 2014 interception. “I have pretty much never hit a wall when it came to football until last year. That’s perfectly fine. I think you have to go through those growing pains to find yourself and keep that motivation. I went through it and I’m ready to get back to being that Sojourn I know I can.”

Although the interceptions didn’t come and his pass interference penalties were high, Shelton still finished with 33 tackles and six pass breakups, helping the Badgers rank fourth in opponent completion percentage at 49.0. During the spring, no cornerback was more active making plays in the secondary than the junior regaining his swagger.

“We’re definitely focused,” Shelton said. “I think during spring as a secondary we played well. Here and there you might have some bumps with things that just happen in football, but our confidence is there and our trust is there. I think that’s one thing in the secondary that everyone has to have in each other is trusting each other. Overall just keep improving.

“Having all those guys – (Hillary), Caputo, Lubern and Tanner back full time - is a big game changer as a secondary. We’re all game changers. We just have to improve together and see where we fall.”

Quieter compared to Shelton, Hillary also plays a big game. The steady fifth-year senior with a receiver background was a second-team All-Big Ten selection a year ago after finishing with 41 tackles, five pass breakups and three tackles for loss.

“Honestly, between me and D-Hill looking back at last year, the biggest thing we need to focus on is just finishing,” Shelton said. “Last year I had numerous plays that I could remember in my head where I was there and didn’t catch the ball: Iowa didn’t catch it, Northwestern didn’t catch it and other opportunities. For me and D-Hill, we just have to finish. One thing about us is we’ll always be in position. Sometimes we might get beat, but we’ll be in position to make plays on the ball. We just have to work on finishing and catching the ball.”

With all four starting positions appearing to be set, first year defensive backs coach Daronte Jones can focus his attention on building depth. With the graduation and transfer of Devin Gaulden to Wake Forest, Jones will likely be looking at sophomore Derrick Tindal or converted wide receiver Natrell Jamerson to claim the nickel corner position.

Due to Jamerson still learning a position as he hasn’t played since high school, Tindal seems to be the favorite to win the job after playing well as a true freshman with 10 tackles. It is still encouraging to see Jamerson make so much progress in the spring, which should give Jones hope that Jamerson’s speed should be able to help the secondary in some capacity.

“I think he’s grown at it and that’s not an easy position to flip to,” head coach Paul Chryst said of Jamerson’s position switch during spring practice. “He’s not new to it but he hasn’t done it in a while. There’s a lot of growth yet to be had but it’s the approach to, he went all in on it, which certainly helps.”

Gaulden wasn’t the only player from the secondary to transfer closer to home. The safety spot was also hit when sophomore Austin Hudson, who made a considerable impact as a true freshman, transferred to South Florida. Even so, Wisconsin has depth with McEvoy making the switch to safety, Figaro having a year of experience and redshirt junior Leo Musso (11 tackles in 12 games) and redshirt sophomore Joe Ferguson (13 tackles in 14 games) both returning.

If it wasn’t for McEvoy making the switch, Wisconsin would likely be in good hands with Figaro. Despite having an occasional hiccup, Figaro registered 24 tackles and was able to force one fumble as a true freshman in 13 games (seven starts).

Titus Booker was the only scholarship defensive back to sign in the 2015 recruiting cycle. Rated a four-star prospect and the No.225 prospect in the Scout 300, Booker has the option of redshirting this season due to the depth at the cornerback position but could bring his speed to the table as a potential returner or gunner.

Expected to be the playmakers of the defense for this upcoming season, Caputo and the rest of the unit are aware and are focused on the task at hand as they try to elevate Wisconsin to a championship level.

“We just have to be the best defense that we can be, but we’ve got to make plays,” said Caputo. “Whether it’s plays on the ball or plays in general, the one thing that turns tides of games is defensive plays. The old adage is offense sells tickets, defense wins championships. That’s not a knock on offense but that’s why I love playing defense.”
