Practice: Wisconsin Has a Change of Scenery

With the knowledge that they avoided serious injuries to their two starting inside linebackers, Wisconsin football continued in full pads Thursday rotating in multiple players at inside linebacker and seeing some take advantage.

MADISON - Wisconsin football fans wandering north of Camp Randall Stadium received a real treat Thursday morning – a free Badgers football practice.

With temperatures expected to reach the high 80s with a good dose of humidity, head coach Paul Chryst moved the team to the grass practice field just outside the stadium instead of working the team on the sometimes steaming Field turf. The result was some good sightlines to the youth movement at inside linebacker.

Wisconsin’s fourth practice of the fall was again in full pads and heavy on position work, as the Badgers continue to figure out their status at certain positions before moving into game prep for No.3 Alabama Sept.5 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

With Leon Jacobs (right big toe) and T.J. Edwards (left shoulder) still out after suffering injuries Wednesday, defensive coordinator Dave Aranda continued to try different combination at inside linebacker. In addition to Keelon Brookins and Nick Thomas, Wisconsin also paired Thomas with Ryan Connelly and fifth-year senior Kellen Jones with the ones. Jones registered a leaping pass breakup after bringing pressure from the outside.

Connelly and true freshman Alec Ingold ran with the second team, as well as freshman Ty DeForest rotating in.

True freshman Chris Orr also received reps at inside linebacker and ended practice with a pick six off redshirt freshman quarterback D.J. Gillins, the first interception thrown by a UW quarterback in two days.

“Chris has really shined the past two days and has shown a lot of improvement,” said Jacobs. “Nick is getting there, Ty is getting there, Keelon is and now we have Kellen. I think it’s a good group. It helps they are running with the ones and getting experience now.”

One of the biggest benefactors of the extra reps has been Brookins, who has had as many knee injuries and position changes as years in the program. Tearing his left ACL his junior year of high school, his right ACL his senior year and suffering another knee injury as a true freshman, the redshirt sophomore has moved from safety to outside linebacker and finally inside last spring.

Saying all the knee problems are behind him, requiring no additional treatment, Brookins embraced the coaching change as a fresh slate to compete.

“I decided to come in a new me,” said Brookins. “I decided to have that chip on my shoulder to work hard and have that chip on my shoulder to be the best I can be and work on the field and contribute to this team in any way possible.”

Ironically, Brookins said dealing with all the position changes has been harder than the knee problems, which is why this camp was so important for him to begin with. Now with injuries, Brookins is getting comfortable with using his hands getting off blocks, reads and getting in a rhythm.

“It’s blessing for me, and a blessing for other guys, to have this opportunity that I have right now,” said Brookins. “It’s negative for the people that got hurt but it makes them want to come back faster. It can be a positive experience for everybody.”

FROM THE INFIRMARY

Jacobs didn’t feel his injury was serious despite the fact he couldn’t put weight on his right foot and needed assistance to the locker room. He turned out to be right, as Jacobs said he was diagnosed with a dislocated right big toe.

Injured when he was engaged in a one-on-one blocking battle with junior tailback Corey Clement, Jacobs said he felt something snap when he planted. He was given no timetable on his return, other than it was a freak injury and said he would be ready for the season opener.

Edwards (left shoulder) remained out and his left arm in a sling but says it’s just precautionary.

“It’s day-to-day,” said Edwards. “I feel good. It’s just a sore shoulder. I wouldn’t expect it to be long to be honest with you. I’ll just let the trainers do what they do.”

David Edwards (left ankle) and Jeremy Patterson (right knee) remained out. Defensive end Chikwe Obasih returned to practice after the heat overwhelmed him a day earlier.

STRENGTH ON STRENGTH

For the second day in a row, Wisconsin’s staff paired like bodied individuals (OL vs DL, RBs vs. LBs, etc.) against one another in a show of strength. A number of battles ended in stalemates, but a handful of players stood out for getting the upper hand on their competitors.

The most impressive of the approximate 25 matchups was the domination of redshirt freshman tailback Taiwan Deal against Kellen Jones. From the word go, Deal got low and kept his legs churning, getting leverage against Jones and pushing him 10 yards back. That play also drew one of the best receptions from the group.

In a battle for the number two running back spot with Dare Ogunbowale, Deal, who was forced to redshirt last season after breaking bones in his hand, earned himself some early points for strength and aggression.

Other eye-popping performances included Ray Ball over Arthur Goldberg, Hayden Biegel taking care of Obasih, David Pfaff over Beau Benzschawl, Troy Fumagalli over Jake Whalen and Tyler Johnson over Mitchell Herl.

UPDATING THE DEPTH CHART

Offense

*Wisconsin used the same offensive line - LT Tyler Marz, LG Ray Ball, C Dan Voltz, RG Michael Deiter and RT Hayden Biegel – throughout the early parts of practice, but offensive line coach Joe Rudolph continues to get Benzschawl a fair look at right tackle. The redshirt freshman took a good portion of reps with the starters. True freshman Jon Dietzen also took some reps at guard with the first team.

*Corey Clement and Ogunbowale continue to take the majority of first team reps at tailbacks, a clear indicator of where things currently stand. Clement had an impressive 40-yard run where he beat senior Michael Caputo to the sideline and zipped right past him, which caused the safety to mutter some choice words.

Defense

*Jake Keefer and Alec James worked as ends on the second-team defensive line while true freshman Olive Sagapolu worked as the second-team nose tackle. Sagapolu took the place of Patterson, and while it’s unlikely he’ll play this season, the future looks very bright for him with the way he’s able to move, bend and take up blockers.

*Jack Cichy and Jesse Hayes manned the outside linebacker spots while D’Cota Dixon and Leo Musso handled the safety roles for the second-team defense.

Extra Points:Wisconsin continued to work heavily on kickoff return. Sophomore Natrell Jamerson and George Rushing were the main punt returners while Jordan Fredrick and Reggie Love occupied the duo. Jamerson continues to look more and more comfortable handling that position, one that he did in high school … Sophomore nose tackle Conor Sheehy appears to be locked in as the starting nose guard, as Sheehy has been extremely disruptive during the first two days of full pads … Wisconsin will resume practice at 10:15 a.m. Friday in a session that will be open to the media.
