Game Day Grades: No.3 Alabama

BadgerNation hands out the grades from No.20 Wisconsin's 35-17 defeat to No.3 Alabama Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

QUARTERBACKS

Joel Stave wanted to make one thing clear: losing 34-17 to No.3 Alabama wasn’t the outcome Wisconsin has prepared for or hoped for. But the fifth-year senior quarterback was a realist, knowing the Badgers were going into a fight with one armed tied behind their back.

So knowing Corey Clement was hampered with a groin injury, Tanner McEvoy was a nonfactor with a sore hamstring and Wisconsin’s offensive line was patch worked, Stave’s performance should be commendable. Utilizing short passes to the flat to take advantage of favorable matchups, Stave went 14-for-16 for 149 yards and a touchdown in the first half. One of his incompletions was a throwaway, and he made a number of tough throws into tight windows and was spot on with his reads.

But the game is about balance, and with no running game, Alabama made adjustments to that kind of passing attack and neutralized Stave. Stave was 7-for-15 for 34 yards in the third quarter. He rebounded in the fourth when the Tide put in their backups to go 5-for-8 and a score and a late interception.

“We got ourselves into some tougher situations in the second half,” said Stave. “We were able to stay ahead of the chains better in the first half. In the second half, sometimes when you get into those third-and-long situations, the defense can open up their playbook a little more; bring different pressures; show more coverage.”

He finished 26-for-39 for 228 yards, helped the offense convert just over 40 percent on third down and executed two red-zone scores. A year ago Alabama had the top red zone defense at 39 percent. It wasn’t perfect but it was more than good, and UW fans should be excited about it.

Grade: B

RUNNING BACKS

Clement hyped himself up all offseason for the opener – his first opportunity to be the feature back – and couldn’t play near 100 percent. That tells you all you need to know about the Badgers’ efforts in the running game.

Wisconsin finished with a grand total of 40 rushing yards, but the trio of tailbacks – Clement, junior Dare Ogunbowale and freshman Taiwan Deal – could only manage 39 yards on 17 carries. Between the three running backs, UW’s longest carry was five yards – twice (including the first play from scrimmage).

“We couldn’t run the football with any consistency,” said head coach Paul Chryst. “We had a couple runs but nothing consistent.”

Ogunbowale averaged three yards on his three carries (sadly the best of the group) but looks like a budding weapon in the passing game. He caught six passes for 39 yards and five of his catches came on third down, four of which moved the chains.

“Dare is a very good option in the pass game,” said Stave. “He catches the ball really naturally, catches it very well out of the backfield and I think he has a good feel for the routes, where the windows are and stuff like that. I’m excited to see where he can keep growing in our passing game.”

Senior Derek Watt had five catches for 22 yards. He had no catches last year and only three the year before. It’d be smart to keep him active with the ball in his hands.

Grade: D

RECEIVERS

Receivers weren’t a huge part of the game plan in attacking Alabama, but the Badgers have to feel good about the contributions from several key areas. As expected, senior Alex Erickson was UW’s best option with six catches for 73 yards and a tremendous 6-yard touchdown catch on third down.

“We knew they were stout up front and relied on their front seven,” said Erickson. “Obviously they were true to what we saw on film. We felt we had to pass the ball a little bit … We worked a lot on it (the passing game) in camp and knew it was a focal point we needed to improve on.”

Outside of Erickson, there were plenty of other things to hang a hat on.

Senior tight end Austin Traylor surpassed his totals from 2014 (3 catches, 29 yards) with three catches for 39 yards. He had one of Wisconsin’s two 20-yard catches and, most importantly, didn’t have any of the major miscues that plagued him a year ago.

Junior Rob Wheelwright also doubled his catch total from a year ago, as he caught two passes for 18 yards and a 3-yard score that capped the scoring. Emerging as the No.3 option in camp, Wheelwright looked the part.

Sophomore Jazz Peavy registered his first catch on a 14-yard out route that should give him some confidence moving forward.

With Tanner McEvoy and Troy Fumagalli not majorly involved because of injuries, other players stepping up and contributing was positive to see.

Grade: B

OFFENSIVE LINE

Well, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be but it still wasn’t great. As the numbers in the running game state, the Badgers had zero success on the ground and a big reason for that was the lack of push up front.

Wisconsin’s pass blocking was decent in the first half (one sack allowed) but broke down as the game wore on. At one point Jonathan Allen simply ran past Hayden Biegel to deliver a sack on Stave that stunted a drive. Simply put, Alabama was more physical in the trenches.

“We did some things well and we did some things wrong,” said center Dan Voltz. “When it comes down to it they made more plays than us … We have to stay on our blocks, get more movement off the ball. If we do that, we’ll give ourselves a chance.”

Wisconsin has a lot of things to clean up, including limiting the amount of missed calls and communications the players admitted were prevalent during the game. That’s attributed to the lack of practice time the group had together in the offseason. The group will improve. Question is how long will it take?

Grade: D

DEFENSIVE LINE

Wisconsin did a lot of base unit looks and the Badgers’ edge players had a nice game. Chikwe Obasih led the way with five tackles and a tackle for loss, Arthur Goldberg – starting his first game on the edge – had three stops and Alec James had a sack.

UW’s nose tackle struggled. Conor Sheehy missed a tackle on a fourth-and-1 play that went for a Henry 37-yard touchdown. He also was flagged for a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct when he contacted Coker’s helmet with his forearm when the Bama QB on the turf. That can’t happen … and neither can an opposing running back run wild through the middle of the field.

Grade: C

LINEBACKERS

I’ve labeled Vince Biegel and Joe Schobert the best one-two punch at OLB in the Big Ten, perhaps the country. They backed me up on that in game one. Schobert had 13 tackles (four for loss) and two sacks, putting a tremendous amount of pressure on Alabama’s offense. In the first 19 plays of the game, Schobert had eight tackles, three tackles for loss and his sacks. Biegel was also impressive with five tackles, a TFL and a quarterback hurry.

“We were able to get after the quarterback, get after the running backs in the backfield,” said Schobert. “Then at halftime, even in the second quarter, started to change up their game plan a little bit and spread it out a little bit more. It was harder to get some of that stuff.”

Making his first career start, redshirt freshman T.J. Edwards was active with 12 tackles and a tackle for loss. As a team, UW registered nine TFLs, accomplishing defensive coordinator Dave Aranda’s goal of generating more backfield pressure. Leon Jacobs finished with five tackles but was hobbled in the late stages of the game.

Wisconsin did have tackling issues against Derrick Henry (13 carries, 147 yards, 3 TDs), and the Badgers young inside linebackers were beaten on crossing routes. On Alabama’s first scoring drive, quarterback Jake Coker took advantage of Jacobs getting swallowed up in the line and Edwards drifting toward him to hit an open receiver over the middle for 22. On the next play, Edwards and Jacobs didn’t blitz but didn’t drop back far enough in coverage and another 22-yard gain happened.

Those things can be corrected moving forward.

Grade: B-

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Losing your senior captain and best tackler in any game is a tough blow. Losing him against the third-ranked team in the country after three plays was impossible to rebound from. Alabama adjusted its offense and attacked the middle of Wisconsin’s defense, and the results spoke for themselves.

Leo Musso and D’Cota Dixon became the duo paired together. Considering they have one combined start, they played OK. Musso’s overall size will handcuff him at times, which will be an issue against more athletic players, and Dixon looked flustered in his first meaningful opportunity but did some good things.

“It’s just one of those things were the next man has got to step in honestly,” said Musso. “Mike is a great, great player for us. From a mentality standpoint there is nothing that should change in the defense’s mind.”

Sojourn Shelton was impressive and looked tremendous in one-on-one coverage, breaking up a pair of deep passes. That’s a good sign moving forward that he has his swagger back. Darius Hillary did some good things but has some areas that he needs to work on moving forward. He overplayed a quick WR screen pass on third-and-long after UW had declined a holding penalty. The result was a fourth-and-short that turned into the game’s first touchdown on the next play.

No turnovers from this group, a huge disappointment considering how much it was practiced and preached during camp, but they did limit the Tide to 4-for-11 on third down.

Grade: C

SPECIAL TEAMS

Whether the players admit to it or not, Rafael Gaglianone’s missed 34-yard kick at the end of the first half was a momentum killer. Instead of getting the ball back to start the second half down only 14-10, UW had nothing to show for the gift Alabama gave them. Gaglianone made a 43-yard kick in the third quarter but only after a five-yard penalty erased what would have been a kick wide left.

Other than that, the special teams were relatively good. Punter Drew Meyer out kicked one of the best punters in the country, as UW’s senior averaged 37.1 yards per kick and put three inside the 20. He also delivered good hang time to limit the returns. Alabama had a combined seven punt and kickoff returns and could only manage a long of 18. Whatever Chris Haering is doing with the special teams schemes, it worked week one.
