BadgerNation counts down the top Wisconsin moments from this past calendar year

Before we ring in 2016, BadgerNation looks back at the five most memorable moments of the 2015 Wisconsin sports calendar.

5, Josh Gasser’s dive into press row helps Wisconsin storm back

Over his five years in Madison, Gasser embodied toughness, grit and all-out effort. That was on display in the Big Ten tournament championship game in Chicago in March. Down two with 44.9 seconds left, Gasser dove into press row on the ensuing possession to save a rebound, set off a string of events that eventually led to Bronson Koenig hitting two free throws to tie the game with 15 seconds left.

Down double digits in the second half, leading head coach Bo Ryan to call his team “soft,” Wisconsin closed the game on a 34-12 run, including scoring all 11 points in overtime, to shock third-seeded Michigan State, 80-69, for the Badgers’ third Big Ten tournament title and first since 2008.

Nigel Hayes tied his career high with 25 points and was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line; Kaminsky finished with 19 points, including a huge 3-pointer in the final seconds of regulation; Bronson Koenig – without a field goal and only one point through the first 29:17 – scored 17 of his 18 points down the stretch.

But it was Gasser’s dive – which may or may not have started with his foot on the out of bounds line – that was the memorable moment.

4, Sam Dekker’s dagger sends UW back to the Final Four

Dekker already has the most famous shot in state high school basketball history. He now has one of the most memorable shots in the history of the University of Wisconsin, a shot that clinched the Badgers’ second straight trip to the Final Four.

Dekker’s contested 3-pointer – three of his 20 points in the second half – with 17.6 seconds left was the dagger and the final piece of a spectacular second half for Wisconsin, which shot the lights out on their way to a 85-78 victory over two-seed Arizona in the West Regional finals at the Staples Center.

An event that resembled more of a heavyweight title fight between two punchers in their prime, Dekker’s 27 points earned him West Regional Most Outstanding Player honors, and he didn’t even lead the Badgers in scoring.

Kaminsky scored 29 points (an NCAA tournament career high) and Gasser added 10, as both earned West Regional All-Tournament Team honors and celebrated together.

After shooting only 38.5 percent in the first half, missing 16 of its 26 shots, Wisconsin couldn’t miss returning from the locker room. The Badgers shot 15 of 19 (78.9 percent), hit 10 of 12 3-pointers (83.3 percent) and scored 55 points.

After Kaminsky got Wisconsin going at the start of the half, scoring 8 of UW’s first 11 points, Dekker took over. He hit all six of the shots he took, all five of the 3-pointers he attempted and fed off his teammate’s hot perimeter shooting to start driving into the paint when the Wildcats were forced to extend their defense.

“I just got some good looks,” said Dekker. “A lot of those weren’t too toughly contested. I was able to step into them and knock them down.”

The last one certainly was, much like the shot he hit three years ago. Then a senior playing for his dad at Sheboygan Area Lutheran High School, Dekker scored 12 of his 40 points in the final 50 seconds but none more memorable than his off-balanced 3-pointer from the right wing.

Three years later, with Wisconsin leading 81-76, Dekker arced a nearly pure shot over Rondae Hollis-Jefferson with two seconds left on the shot clock and 17.6 seconds on the game clock. That sent the bench into tizzy, Hollis-Jefferson hunched over in disbelief and Dekker confidently strutting pass UW coach Bo Ryan on the sidelines, who gave him a slap on the rear.

“This was something we wanted so bad,” said Dekker “We visualized so much that now that it’s here, we know what it is like. But we know how shortly it can end at the same time. We were stripped of our chance at a title last year. We don’t want to let that happen again. We have the mindset that we have a lot more basketball to play.”

3, UW notches two big bowl wins

After four straight bowl losses, a streak that began with three losses in the Rose Bowl, Wisconsin needed something special to happen after a second head coach in two years bolted from the program. Once again, in stepped in Barry Alvarez but the results ended differently in Tampa, Fla.

Alvarez took a much more active approach to game planning and prep than he did in the 2013 Rose Bowl loss to Stanford and the results paid off in a 34-31 overtime win over Auburn. Melvin Gordon rushed for 251 yards and three touchdowns but there were plenty of heroes, like Joel Stave’s key fourth-down completion, Joe Schobert single-handedly shutting down the Tigers’ offense in overtime and Rafael Gaglianone making the game-tying 29-yard kick in regulation and the winning 25-yard try in overtime. When Auburn’s attempt missed to the right, UW’s sideline exploded and Alvarez retired – for a third time – having improved his record to 9-4 in bowl games.

The celebration was more subdued last night in San Diego, but the 23-21 win over USC was big on many levels. Not only did it validate UW’s 2015 season, one in which the Badgers beat no teams that finished with winning records, but it gave the program another high-profile victory against one of the biggest named programs in the sport. Paul Chryst and his staff patch worked an offense together through countless injuries and defensive coordinator Dave Aranda arranged one of the best defenses in program history to help UW win 10 games for the fifth time in the last seven seasons.

2, Bo Ryan retires

He wanted to retire in June. Then he was going to retire after the 2015-'16 season. Then maybe he wasn't. In the end, Ryan surprised just about everyone on Dec.15 by announcing he was immediately stepping down as Wisconsin's basketball coach shortly after the team’s victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Ryan finished with a career record of 747-233 and his mark of 172-68 in Big Ten play (.717) was the highest winning percentage in conference history. He went 364-130 (.737) at Wisconsin and made the Badgers into a nationally respected brand.

Ryan's longtime assistant, Greg Gard, was named interim coach, an on-the-job experience that Ryan hoped would net Gard the full time position after the season.

1, UW beats Kentucky to reach the national finals

Despite being held without a field goal for 9 minutes, 9 seconds in the second half, the Badgers’ battle-tested group earned a final 40 minutes with a gritty, gutsy defensive effort in a 71-64 victory over previously unbeaten Kentucky in front of 72,238 at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Four players reached double figures for the Badgers (36-3), who advanced to their first national final since 1941 after the Badgers continuously punched Kentucky’s heralded front court.

Even through it started a lineup that rivaled the size of NBA teams, Wisconsin outrebounded Kentucky 34-22, including 12-6 on the offensive glass that led to a plus-7 edge in second-chance points.

“Out of everybody in the country, I thought we matched up probably the best against them,” said Bronson Koenig (12 points). “Style of play, size, our offense, we don’t really care who scores or who gets the ball.”

A year ago the Wildcats scored 23 second-chance points off 11 offensively rebounds, controlled the paint and tempo in their 74-73 win in Arlington, Texas. This year, not so much.

After UW’s frontcourt – Sam Dekker, Frank Kaminsky and Nigel Hayes – combined for 25 points (8 of 13) in last season’s ending loss, Kaminsky led all scorers with 20 points and 11 rebounds, Dekker had 16 points on 6 of 9 and Hayes had 12 points and five rebounds (four offensive).

A little bit of luck was certainly on their side, especially when Hayes’ put back to tie the game at 60 came after the shot clock showed “0” with the ball still in his hands (it couldn’t be reviewed over two minutes). But godsend had nothing to do with Wisconsin’s defense down the stretch.

The Badgers forced three shot clock violations and held a roster comprised on nine McDonald’s All-Americans to only six points in the final 7:50.

“At the heart of this program, that’s what it is: it’s a lot of toughness and it’s a lot of grit,” said Gard. “Obviously we’re extremely talented, we know that. We’ve got great players, but when it comes to those types of situations, you’ve got to reach back a little bit and dig in.”
