A region Wisconsin running back John Settle has recruited for years, North Carolina is a sleeper state in terms of talent. After landing cornerback Madison Cone out of Kernersville in the 2017 class, the Badgers have made an early offer to Charlotte Christian running back Justus Woods, the only known tailback Wisconsin has offered in the 2018 recruiting cycle.
“Wisconsin really has it all,” Woods told BadgerNation. “They have a great program and know how to really make running backs into N.F.L. picks. They have solid academics, and I feel it's a place where I could grow and become more of a complete person and player. Coach Settle has always raved about the facilities here, so I really see a complete package at Wisconsin."
The Badgers were Woods’ first power five offer in May, beating schools Northwestern and Virginia to the punch. Unable to visit many schools outside his region over the summer, Woods says Duke, Northwestern and Wisconsin are talking to him the most and plans to start making longer visits following his junior year.
“All are major targets for me, and I have very good relationships with their coaching staffs,” Woods said. “Me and Coach Settle are very close, but I hope to build stronger relationships with other coaches on Wisconsin's staff.”
Working on developing into a leader during the offseason, Woods rushed for 50 yards and 16 carries and a touchdown in last weekend’s 20-13 neutral site victory over Charlotte Catholic – the state’s reigning 4A state champions.
“To carry on tradition that Charlotte Christian has means everything to me,” Woods said. “Everything is earned, nothing given is what I live by. I remember I had mentors when I was young guy on the team, and now I want to be a mentor to the younger guys. I want to show them how to work, how to prepare, how to deal with adversities and most importantly how to become a man."
Woods has no time frame for making a commitment.
