A projected look at the 2017 NCAA tournament bracket

Scout bracketology expert Kyle Reichert updates his projected bracket for the 2017 NCAA tournament.

The bubble has been scrutinized for weeks and now we are about to find out what the committee values. Who’s in and who’s out?

Not worried: Marquette, Xavier and Seton Hall

Slightly nervous: SyracuseWake Forest and USC

Syracuse, despite hiccup city in the ACC tournament, and USC remain in the field in accordance with the committee’s recent trend of favoring power conference teams over mid-major teams with solid win/loss records. The main opportunity for a bid steal lies with Rhode Island today. If they can beat VCU, the Rams will claim the A-10 auto bid and knock Syracuse out of our projection.

The one line has not changed since Thursday despite the losses by North Carolina and Kansas and the unexpected tournament championship of Duke, which moved onto the two line.

Illinois State will likely end up on the outside looking in due to a lack of top-50 RPI wins. If the Redbirds end up in the field, it will be a significant departure from the recent trend of power conference teams with quality wins.

In the Big Ten, Wisconsin and Michigan  meet for the championship, and the Badgers are back in the mix for a five or six seed. In a down year for one of the traditional power conferences, the Big Ten will likely not have any team among the top four seed lines. As we’ve learned in the past few years, the outcome of the B1G championship game likely has little to no impact on the seed list.
