Wisconsin capped a opening-weekend sweep of Vermont Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 victory.

The Badgers flat-out dominated the two-game set, placing 124 shots on goal, compared to 19 for the Catamounts.

The weekend series marked a new chapter in Wisconsin women's hockey, as eight freshman replaced the team's first full recruiting class. So far, so good.

"It was good, we needed to play some games," Badger coach Mark Johnson said. "We had some questions answered, just trying to make progress. There is no better way to see than in a game. We played well, had a quite a few chances tonight."

Wisconsin platooned its goaltenders during the series, playing sophomore Meghan Horras Friday, junior Jessica Bernal for the first two periods Saturday and freshman Christine Dufour . The trio was challenged infrequently, but did pitch a pair of shutouts. Horras had six saves Friday and Bernal and Dufour tallied seven and six Saturday, respectively.

"They didn't see a lot of shots, but at the same time you can put them into action to see how comfortable they are playing in a big building," Johnson said. "It is nice to see how comfortable they are and how they react to different situations."

Saturday, freshman Meghan Mikkelson picked up her second goal in as many games in her young career, sophomore center Nikki Burish tallied two goals and junior defenseman Molly Engstrom contributed three points, giving her a team-leading four points for the season.

Mikkelson's tally Saturday came just 2:03 into the second period from just above the crease on a perfect setup from Engstrom, giving the Badgers a 3-0 lead.

Wisconsin took a 2-0 lead in the first period, outshooting the Catamounts 15-3 in the process. Engstrom opened the scoring when her shot from the point took a fortuitous bounce off the pipe, then deflected off the back of Vermont goaltender Kami Cote and trickled into the net.

The Badgers, though, did not need many bounces on this day. The ice was practically tilted in Wisconsin's favor throughout the contest with the puck residing predominantly in the Catamounts defensive zone.

The Badgers next take to the ice at 1 p.m. Saturday at Maine.
