Nicols' case had been monitored in the preseason by UW team physicians who made their decision Friday. She played in 26 games last season starting five and averaged 17.2 minutes per game.
Wisconsin coach Lisa Stone was disappointed with the news. "This hurts us in our already thin perimeter," Stone said. "Shawna is one of the best passers on the team and we were expecting her to play a lot of minutes. Knowing she would rather be playing, I'm sure she will continue to support us from the bench and we will use her vast knowledge of the game to help other players in practice and games."
Nicols was the 2000 Wisconsin Gatorade Player of the Year and led her Pius XI team to three consecutive private school state titles. The Street and Smith honorable mention All-American averaged 2.3 points and 1.5 assists per game last season while averaging her most minutes as a Badger.
